Have A Big Block . I Was Wondering About Those New Trannys. I Have Two Trannys That Are Shifted Electricy. There Are No Modulators. So Could I Get The Name Of Those Kind. It Has 4 Gears, Overdrive. I Was Wondering About Putting It In My Car Will It Work?wat Stuff Will I Need To Make It Work . Is It Worth It? It Came Out Of A Mid 80's Truck Heavy Duty.. Thanks

I'm going to assume big block chevy... For the sake of this discussion, there are three families of transmission. Small, Medium, and Large. The small transmissions are the 200 and 200-4r. They share things in common except one is a three speed and one is a four. Both are non-electric. The mediums are the 350, 700r4 and 4L60E. The 350 and 700r4 are 3 and 4 speed respectively. The 4L60E is almost identical to the 700r4 except its electronically controlled. The Bigs are the 400 and 4L80E. The 400 is a 3 speed and the 4L80E is and electronic four speed. There is no big tranny that is a non-electric four speed.

If yours came from a mid 80s truck and its a 4 speed its most likely a 700r4, but it wouldn't be in an HD truck. The only other one it could be is a 4L80E, but it didn't come onto the scene until 91. Don't confuse an electronically controlled transmission with a tranny that has a couple electronic connectors on it, and don't confuse 3/4 ton with HD.

The best way is to compare the shape of the pan with these reference images on this page:

the older 700r4 used a t.v. cable ( throttle valve) it was hooked to the throttle body to monitor amount of throttle movement and adjust pressure accordingly. This cable entered the trans right below the cooler lines. You can use the electronic shifted trans with an aftermarket trans controller.
