The proper name for the type of carpet weave that came stock on a 70 Cougar is "level loop".
As the name implies. it is a bunch of loops. A better choice would be "cut pile", if they offer such a thing for your car. Loop type carpet catches and holds the dirt and debris under the loop, while a cut pile will allow much of the dirt to get vacuumed out. How about some aqua-marine shag? JK..Mikey

Mikey is exactly right. Your car came with nylon level loop carpeting. Cut pile carpet is basically just level loop with the tops of the loops cut off. Because the ends are cut off, it feels softer and looks more luxurious, but level loop is more durable than cut pile and the loops actually prevent dirt from penetrating better than cut pile. The picture shows level loop on the right, and cut pile on the left. What you want is a carpet set molded for your particular car, and there are all kinds of places to order it on the internet. One good place is Auto Custom Carpets: www.accmats.com

The level loop carpet for your car at Auto Custom Carpets is $169.00, so yes, anything under $200 for molded carpets ready to install in your car would be good.
