What kind of scratches are we talking about? Personally, I don't want to "ask" my primer to do fill more than 180, or 120 grit scratches at the most.

Urethane primer is what is commonly used for surfacing body work (blocking) and all I have used for years since the lacquer days. But some will use an epoxy or even an "iso free" 2K urethane like product.

Most any quality urethane primer is going to fill 180 grit scratches without any problem what so ever.

I am not sure I understand what you mean. Urethane primer doesn't replace polyester putty. Polyester primer maybe, but not urethane.

Some of those "epoxy/filler" primers are known to shrink a lot, so if you
do use one, allow a lot of time afterwards for that.
I like to sit them out in the sun a couple of days before sanding.
