Chevy/GMC trucks/vans, 84 till around 92, S-trucks and M-vans. with the 4.3 untill about 92 are the most common source. Some rear wheel drive GM cars of that era.

the 4.3 Liter eng is going to have a 4l60E (electronicaly shifted tranny) in it" not the best choice unless you are going to use a DFI or Factory FI? for a V8 sbc the easiest to find would be a 3rd gen firebird/camaro yrs 88-91, if you need to use a mechanical speedo then look for a pre 88 camaro/iroc" also the governor in the V8 camaro/firebirds would put your shifts in the right place as opposed to the s-trucks and astro`s they will shift sooner!

Like Bob said... any van or truck, full size, s-10, Astro or what-have-you UP TO '92 will have a 700R4. Most all vehicle lines changed to the 4l60E in '93.
I would suggest going to a trans shop and getting one that is already rebuilt to Corvette specs. Yes... it does cost more up front but how many times do you have to swap junkyard trannies before it becomes cost effective. After the 2nd or 3rd time the rebuilt will look pretty good...

Pre 92-4.3 Astro's and S-trucks all had big belhousing. A lot of them were not lockup however. The smaller motors (3.1-2.8 down) had the small belhousing

700R4 Introduced In '82. '82-'84 Used 27 Spline Torque Converter-Same As All 2004Rs. '85 Up Went To 30 Spline. The Performance Tranny Companies -TCI,B&M, Hughes, Art Carr, ETC Use 30 Splines On All Their Rebuilds But Still Offer 27 Spline Converters. Factory Made Several Inprovements In '86. Again In '89. Aftermarket Took It From There. CHEVY Performance Reman 700R4 Nice Piece Too. As Far As The Output Shaft, Driveshaft, Mount, ETC SBC Bellhousing And S-10 Bellhousing 700R4s The Same. Thats Why When I Do An SBC Conversion (For A Friend-I Prefer Sticks) I Bolt The SBC Version In Then Make The Engine Fit. I Can See No Need To Alter Anything At The Tranny Level In This Case. MD
