What wheel wrench

Guys

I had a small shimmie in one of my front wheels , when I put on a new set of tires the guy who installed them said one of the front wheels was not true a round , so i ordered a new wheel and it took way to much wheel weights for me ( three 5 inch weights)so I sent it back . The wheels are cragar classics , this is the third set I have had on this car so you can say I like them , have had car sence 1968. Also when I tryed to install the new wheel there is no room to get a deep socket on the lugs with out scarring the wheel . When I put my old spare on no proublm using a deep socket , The wheel size is 14 x 6 inch just like my old one . What I would like to know what do you use on wheels that the lug nuts are close to the side of the wheel with out scarring the wheel ?

FAT40 P .S When I put on the spare the shimmie was gone

re: What wheel wrench

YOU need a different wheel ... IMHO

There was a thread ( China wheels ) about companies now making less quality wheels. Quality issues and quality control has gone the way of the Dodo bird.

Maybe eBay would have a older set ... to match the original ones ...

These part # SCDPT6 on page 3 are what I have and so far they have taken every wheel off that I came across. A bit pricey but maybe you could buy just the socket you need.

re: What wheel wrench

Try using a spark plug socket. You may need to remove the grommet to get a better fit, but usualy this works.

re: What wheel wrench

If it's a true Cragar, then it is made in the U.S.A. It's rare to see a steel wheel being imported. Besides, the Cragar label for steel is now owned by Carlisle Tire & Wheel, which makes their wheels in California. The aluminum part of Cragar is owned by Weld Wheels. And Weld also exclusively builds their wheels in the U.S.

Although I doubt it, it could be the quality of steel that is suspect. The manufacturing process rarely causes a wheel to move excessively (There will always be a bit of wheel run-out with a steel wheel). Or you could check how the tire shop that you used mounts their wheels. If they use a "Euro-style" Coats or Hunter changer that clamps the wheel at the base, then your golden. Some shops will use the older post mount changers. And these will ruin a Cragar in no time because it places the clamping force on the front hub.

Well, I'm glad you chose a great company to install the tires on your wheels.

If Cragar sends you anything back, be sure to give the guys at Discount Tire copies. Because that would make life easier when they send the wheel back for credit. Carlisle, Cragar's parent company, sometimes is a pain in the you know what when attempting to exchange or even send back "defective" products.

Got a question here.

You changed wheel but did you ever think you might have a bad tire?

I wonder if some of these wheels may be off-shore copies? It is legal to state MADE IN USA if assembled here. The components may be off-shore.

I know there is a plethora (or was) of off-shore copies of FORD cast aluminum wheels and the thing was most people will buy them thinking they are saving money.

I for one would like/need to know the outcome of CRAGAR wheels as I love them but if all that is available now is poor quality off-shores, I don't need to buy them...

There are still companies that shave tires?? It' kind of odd considering tire manufacturers are going away from the old clamshell style molding process in favor of the segmented style.

That and they have started to get better in cutting down the radial conicity in the tires.

And again, Cragar wheels are built in the U.S. But they are a rolled, stamped and welded wheel. And this process is inferior to the ways of making an aluminum wheel.

Then how do you explain this earlier post? I think more is manufactured off-shore than many think. Even HOLLEY didi-maued to MEXICO how many years ago? I didn't notice any prices going down (the usual excuse for going out of country).

Chinese wheels

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Been trying to make up my mind between American Racing Chrome Torque Thrust D's, or Chrome Cragar SS wheels for my 34. Well today i was in the Goodyear tire store and they had both wheels on display. I flipped them both around and on the back of the Cragar was "Made in China".

I had emailed American Racing earlier to ask them if their wheels were made in China and they got back to me pretty quickly. Their wheels are made in various countries (not China), but are polished/finished or chromed in the U.S. So when I saw where the Cragar SS was made, my mind was made up.
