What Would Happen?

if one were to crank the engine with points fully closed, would this damage the coil? points? or anything else? conversly, if one were to crank engine with points open as far as they will go, would this damage the coil? points? or anything else? thanks

i dont understand what you are trying to accomplish, but either way it would be the same as sitting with the key on engine off just listening to the radio. holding them closed, aside from bending them, you might burn them.the engine will be turning but nothing will be sparking. if you are using something to hold the points open or closed i could see you bending something and needing to readadjust them. espcially if you are holding them closed and cranking it.if you are trying to crank the engine without getting it to fire, why not just disconnect the hot wire to the coil?

QUOTE-i dont understand what you are trying to accomplish.

if you re-read the post i did not say i was trying to accomplish anything. i simply asked a strait forward question. QUOTE-if one were to crank the engine (i should have said repeatedly) with points fully closed, would this damage the coil? points? or anything else? conversly, if one were to crank(i should have said repeatedly) the engine with points open as far as they will go, would this damage the coil? points? or anything else? pretty straight forward question.

Doc here,

The Resulting problems could occur with the points in a permanent "closed position" ..

The engine would not run..and should it have a random Arc~over..it would most likely backfire, If you had a proper ballast your coil Might survive..however , you are changing it's duty cycle from 50% to 100%..Causing undue heat stress..and pre~mature failure..(when the points are closed, the coil is shorted to ground) and lastly the points would most likely weld them self together or burn and pit..

IF they were too far open, any spark generated across them would be at best weak to the plugs..after a certain gap, no spark would jump at all..While this would impose no extra load on the coil..IF it ran..It would run like crap in a can..(like when you punched it..the engine would say: "like, you uhhh..Want me to do , What??" ) Cold Starting would not just be a job..but an adventure..

Doc
