I would go for the crossmember. Cutting a frame in half then welding another section to it requires some extremely accurate measuring and someone who has a real good welding machine and a real good knowledge of welding and metals. Just seen too many screwed up jobs , that the only way to fix is with a new frame. A crossmember saddles under the frame and is a lot easier to place in the proper position.
