What years was the 409 mfg

Hi all

My name is Bill and i am a retired diesel mechanic. We have been trying to find out what years the Chevy 409 was mfg. I have looked in the data base and no luck. All the manuals that i have do not show this.
Hope some can help us with this.
Bill

first year was 1961 with the 360 HP version as top of the line with a 4bbl carb and 11.25:1 comp ratio stock. 1962 would find a 380 HP version, with a 4bbl carb and 11:1 comp ratio stock., a 409 HP version was available with 2X4bbl carbs and 11:1 comp ratio stock. 1963 had 3 versions a 340 HP version, 4bbl with 10:1 comp ratio, a 400 HP version, 4bbl with 11:1 and a 425 HP version with 2X4bbl carbs and 11:1 comp ratio the same engines were used in 1964. in 1965 the 425 HP version was dropped, leaving the other 2 from the 1963/1964 model years, 1965 was the last year of the 409

And only for half a year...the 396 Mark IV was introduced 1/2 way through the 65 model year. You could get some 65s with 409s and later some with 396s.

Was the '63 Z-11 a bored out 409, or a fore runner of the 396 block?

I'm not certain, maybe someone else knows, but they did call it the "Mystery Motor". To me, that says it was all new, probably a forerunner of the 396/427.

75 Years of Chevrolet says that the 409/ 360 horsepower engine was a twin 4 barrel at 5800 rpm was a $484 option and drew just 142 orders in 1961. The 348 was also an option. 1965 is the last year that the 409 was listed in this book as an option, they had the 400 horse version offered, but had dropped the 425 horse at the end of 1964.

the Z-11 was a stroked 409 out to 427 CI. Actually the Z-11 & the "mystery motor" were 2 totally differant engines. The z-11 was in the 348/409 family... MARK I. The Mystery motor was 427 CI...but it was never released, totally differant than the 348/409...but not the same as traditional BB Chevys. The "Mystery Motor" would be Mark II. the 396 introdued in mid year 1965 was the first of the traditional MarkIII Big Block Chevys we all have grown to love. John

The 61 409 was a late year add on Single carter 4-barrel 360hp 348's came with up to 350hp with the 3 2 barrels. 62 single 4 was 380hp and the two 4's was the famous 409hp

You are correct on the Mystery Motor being a Mk II but the 396-454's are Mk IV's. The Mk III evidently never got past the developmental stage, I have never seen any reference to it.
