What'd this 700R4 come out of...

Code is 7FAM205H , I figured out that it was made in 1987(instead of 89 like the seller told me) and I also know that it was made on 8/13/87 on second shift. But I can't find out what the model was that it came in... can anyone tell me what "FAM" model is? Or it may just be "FA".. thanks in advance!!

Thanks!!! I was really curious because I've heard that 700r4 tranny's from 4.3 engines have less clutches inside them. So I wanted to find out if I needed to rebuild/upgrade it before using it behind my 350. I tried everyway I could think of to decipher the "FAM" info. Just curious but how'd you do it?

ASTG UPDATE HANDBOOK

700R4 4L60 1982-1993 Edition

1987 was a changeover year some had the auxiliary valve some didn't

I think the Auxiliary valve models all had the same number of clutches
V6 and V8 the same

The 91 "M" van 4.3 L 700r4 that I have has the same number of clutches as the V8 models

If the case was shaved, then it is out of a 4.3, otherwise out of a V8.

thanks guys... not to sound rediculous but how could I tell if it has the auxillary valve and if the case was shaved? I would assume by pulling the valve body cover(auxillary) and to look/measure(shaved case)

Auxiliary valve body cases have a parabolic casting seam over the cooler lines.

Shaved cases have the two ears shaved off next to the motor leaving only 4 bolt holes for the aluminum dust cover.

all augzillary valve body trannys have a big M30 casted into the bell housing could be on either side around the lower part where the dust shield bolts up if it does not have this the only other way too tell incase it is a crossover tranny and was released without the casting of m30 which some of the first ones did not have simply pull the pan off if it is auq. it will have a tube that runs from the pump around the side of the vb to the rear of the housing to a accumulator body seperate from the vb if there is no tube not aug.

You have an auxiliary transmission. Since it is not a 4x4 (K) case, my comment about the shaved case is not applicable.

I see the tube... I'm glad because the only alphanumeric on the bellhousing was "MD8".

Btw, I appreciate all the info you guys have given me!! Since it was made in '87 and I have no way of knowing it's operating condition... any recommendations/opinions on a rebuild? Yes, maybe, no? Ready-made kit or "a la cart" parts? I do know that assuming I rebuild, a Beast Sun shell is a good idea. Not sure about any other "upgrades" though..

Not to add confusion :

although that trans has auxiliary v-body, it is a cross over year trans. It has the early design v-body. That determined by the dual holes in the valve assembly that is next to the manual valve. Updated v-body has one hole

Pay attention to check ball locations used when you remove the v-body and separator plate
