what's a 428 cobra jet engine worth

I have a 69 428 cobra jet engine that I am in the process of rebuilding. the cost is going to surpass $2,500 and I a wondering if it is worth it.
It has a 4 speed top loader transmission attached.
should I part it out. I am looking at building a kit car and using this engine.

custom built engine is difficult to sell. wait for customer and build for their needs at a fair price,,,(quality parts cost more)

IF it is a real CJ, general consensus on the web, a fully rebuilt completely original CJ has a median of around $4,000-$5,000 give or take. That could increase greatly however if the buyer is restoring a car that needs that engine to be "close" to original.

This is the perfect prime mover for a Cobra replica type car. 2500 bucks is a drop in the bucket for a performance type motor.

Actually, rebuilding a 428 using modern methods costs significantly MORE than $2,500. As old as it is, all the valves, springs, retainers, locks, shafts, rockers, etc, should be replaced with at minimum, OEM quality (readily available through "normal" engine parts sources). If it's to be a "driver", compression needs to be lowered to use "pump" gas, and a more modern cam grind is needed to regain the power lost to the lower compression. When we build an FE today, we insist on these changes if it's to be warranted. It isn't a matter of making money OR selling parts. It's a matter of providing a durable and practical performance engine.

I agree, along with the Top Loader, you have the PERFECT setup for a Cobra "kit". You can always add bolt heads to the pan rail and let people THINK it's a 427...(:- 428s make good low-end power, so you can gear it a bit "taller" and still perform well. Hard to argue with Top Loader. Have the bolt circle drilled for a 10.4 or 11" GM diaphragm-style pressure plate, and you won't have all the headaches Fords are associated with regarding the clutch linkage and rough shifting.

Care full if using that trans because In 1964 and early 1965 a few transmissions used the 25 spline output shaft which proved to be defective when big power was applied to them. These transes were quickly dropped from production. But some are still out there!!! And you never know it could be one even if the engine is a 69
So check and make sure that its not one if your considering putting down some hole shots!! For a ride to the store or daily transpertation it may be fine

The 428s used the 31 spline output shaft!

You got an exceptional engine for rebuilding and as P body says I agree and with the trans included if its the 31 spline well worth rebuilding (except for the bolt heads to the pan rail LOL)
