whats the best ford tranny for street rods?
 

what is the best ford tranny for street engines i hear AOD is good because it has four gears but the C6 is undestructable what is ur opinion?C4?

hey guy iv heard the same about aods im going with the c6 in my rod it held up under a lot of stress before and i liked it i could leave cuba go to st louis and back on abought 100miles away and still have abought 3/4 of a tank of gas of coruse thats when gas was good also cheaper i feel its all in what you like iv heard good and bad about all ford trannys good luck gordon

C6 is by far the easiest way to go. What engine are you using? I don't think the C6 will bolt to the small fords. AOD will take some electrical enginuity, but would be better for cruise and acceleration with 4 gears. I am putting an AOD and 5.0 in a 56 F100. Not having much luck finding electrical help. Not as easy as a chevy.

The C6 is the is definately stronger than the C4 and they made them to bolt up to the Windsors. But having overdrive is nice and no there isn't all that much to the AOD. It's the AODE which is the newer unit which is electronically controlled. Unless you're building a monster, I've seen some pretty quick street mustangs with AOD's in them.

a built C4 is the best tranny ford ever built I'll probably get some flack here cause the C6 is good too but takes many horses to run it the AOD is too weak for any serious rodding unless you have lots of bucks to build or have one built

had a 71 mustang originally had 302 with c-4 got a 351 clevland, the c-4 bolted up and worked well
always. didn't burn out much to high gears but I
worked it, it held. Never heard much about AODs
but I wonder about the interchangability amonst
years. Would be nice if a wide window of motors
to all.

HAVE AN AOD IN MY 53 F100 BEHIND A 302, MUST USE CORRECT FLEXPLATE, OTHERWISE, A PIECE OF CAKE TO REPLACE C4, HAVE ANOTHER TO USE IN MY 46 CPE.

VIC, YOU CAN REACH LOKAR AT 423 966 2269 YOU WILL NEED A CABLE FOR AOD[THEY WILL ASK SPECIFICS] AND A BRACKET. IT IS AN EASY HOOK UP WITH GOOD INSTRUCTIONS. COST ABOUT $60 AS BEST I RECALL. I FOUND A GREAT BOOK ON FORD AUTOMATICS AT PEPBOYS OR O'REILLYS WITH GOOD INFO ON AOD.

Well, just take this into consideration, a C4 can be built to handle 900hp and offers very little drag, a C6 can handle just about anything but offers quite a bit more drag. An AOD can also be built to handle just as much as a C4 but it costs more. Also, it has overdrive which the c4/c6s dont. All are great transmissions with a lot of aftermarket catering. if you are at all concerned about gas mileage i would just go with the AOD.

I have a built C4 that runs all day at the strip behind a 460 with a 300 hp hit of gas... Id go with an OD trans for a street rod... If you are really making that much power, use a built C4 and one of those Gear Vendors under/overdrive units... they are supposed to take 2000 hp+... id like to see THAT motor!

Those gear vendor things are almost 2000 dollars. Why spend that much money adding it to a C4 when you could just build a strong AOD for less money.

Cuz even a built AOD cant take **** for power... We lunched two of em last season with just a 429 and 150 hit of gas... for a Street rod, an AOD is just fine, but I like the ability to split gears with the GV unit... It has knocked 4 tenths of my 1/8 mile....

What engine is he running? That is the real question! Blower? Big Block? How will he drive it? If it is a cruise night vehicle, a stock AOD is fine, if it sees time on the quarter, a 429 or 460 is marginal on a built AOD... Most "Built" AODs are only rated at 500 horse...
