the ones you have listed are all good, but a 350 or 400 has better build choices and more ready available parts.. but thats up to you and what your plans are for the engine.. my self i like 327

I find this question laughable. Which is the best? The best at what?
Or, could it be leading to, which is the best over all?
The one with the most cubic inches and the most cubic dollars.

The best sbc is the one that fits the application you intend to use it for.....whatever that is. Also the best sbc is the one that starts every time, doesn't overheat, has acceptable street manners and gets halfway decent gas mileage. Obviously I'm partial to 327's also.....but if I was going to build another I think I would find a late model truck roller block to start with.

My 2 cents is a small journal.

Yes I realize that-Duh. I have only found 3, 400s in the last 25 years and I still own 2 of them. Yes you can make more power everywhere for the SAME amount of money. They don't sell cams, pistons etc cheaper just because you are building a 400,lol.I'm just saying that because 350s are a great engine and easy to find, so why not build an extra 33 inches into it for basically the same money. If you have a pile of 400s, why not sell him one?

Yes. Build a 383. This site needs more threads about how a 383 isn't making enough power, learning how to tune a 383, which heads are best for a 383, which cam is best for a 383, or I just bought a 383 and I don't know what's in it.

LMAO! If it wasn't this , it would be something else, lol. Kinda like everytime someone asks about their 305-YANK IT OUT AND PUT A 350 OR 454 IN. I have read that soooo many times on here that it makes my head spin, lol. I personally like just a plain old 350 the best. The 383? I'm just making an observation, lol.

If this going to be a daily driver I would build a mild late model roller motor. If it a go fast project spend the bucks for a after market 4.125 block and go for cubic inches.

I pulled the 305 out of my firebird and regreted that decision every time i went to the gas station. Should have just built up the 305 and had some fun. But i just had to have the 350.

OK, OK

All joking aside ... For a good street engine

The 1996 350 Vortec SBC engine gets the vote in my book.
Because of these facts

1 ) one piece real main seal.
2 ) good no leak style valve covers
3 ) roller hydraulic camshaft
4 ) good power for 350 cubic inches
5 ) good usable street torque
6 ) good fuel mileage
7 ) very street able

Add in the fact that they have been around for a good while, easily found and seem to go 150/175 thousand miles with no problems ( with proper maintenance )

If you want B I G horsepower ... you need big cubic inches ...
" that is no replacement for displacement "

Just like young fellas. Bigger is better.

I kinda like the 283.
It's not how big it is, it's how you use it.
