Wow, those questions are really broad.

1. It all depends on the car.
2. It depends on what you can spend.
3. It all depends on how much you want to cut up your car, to make it fit.

cutlass calais/ ciera or cutlass supreme? if you want to keep it FWD, the calais' -n-body- best choices are a quad 4 W41, or a 3800SC series 3 conversion. the supreme -w-body- you can go with a 3800SC, a 3.4DOHC, or a northstar
keep in mind the 3800 and northstr swaps are VERY expensive.

that or you could add a roll cage, add frame braces, cut out and re fab the center 2' of the unibody frame and convert it to RWD and drop in a 383

it really depends on the engine, tell me what it's running and i can help you out.

My last project car was FWD. It had a 3.0L (181ci) V6, no turbos, and ran a 14.1 @ 100mph with weight reduction and basic bolt-ons and free mods. Then with a 30 shot on top of that, it ran a 13.6 @ 106mph.

I would suggest that you find something more suitable... maybe a Mustang or 3rd gen F-body. If you MUST go with the Olds, the cheaspest way to go is: redneck intake and exhaust, weight reduction, and nitrous.

both are effectively the same engine, the 2.8 is just a destroked 3.1. both had auto and 4 spd manual tranny options. my advice, get the one with the manual, if one has it, and swap in a getrag-284 5spd manual and 3.4 DOHC LQ1 from the 91-96 cut supreme or grand prix.

that or keep shopping, the early 3.1's and the 2.8's were never really good engines to begin with. the 2.8's have a shelf life of about 130k-150k miles from what i hear.

just an option package, but if you have your heart set on the olds, then you've already made your decision on which to get. if you can't afford a new engine, i doubt you'll want to buy a new transmission.

sorry for being a post-whore in this thread. anyone else want to add tehir 2 cents?

head over to some GM FWD sites for it

Being an N-body, I would drop in a 3400 SFI, out of a Grand Am/Alero. Check out RSM Racing for all sorts of parts for the 3400. Just look under the Grand Am. These engines have potential, you just have to massage it out of 'em. Also you would need the tranny, try to find a 4T65E. Grab the computer too. If you get the car, it will be an intresting project.

Oh, BTW, check out N-body.net. The guys over there will be able to help a lot too. I am malibucdl over there as well.

Ahhh, my bad. In that case he can check out W-body.com
The Packard just got surrounded by all the potted-plants we have here at the house. We had to put them into the garage to get them out of the cold. WTF is up with that? Now I gotta wait till the plants are outa the garage so i can work on the car. These freakin plants get better treatment than my daily driver.

Man, if you're just looking for a beater daily driver, I would suggest that you wait for something else to come along. I worked for Auto Zone for 3 years, and sold more parts for W-Bodies than any other car on the road. Mostly miscellaneous sensors, and electronic parts like coils and control modules. Look for a carbed car or maybe an import like an Accord or Civic.

3800 s/c (L67) is the only way to go if you want real power potential. We have GTP's running low 11's, putting down well over 400 horsepower and over 450 lb-ft of torque w/ out spray! 4t65eHD tranny comes w/ 2.93 gears, but can be changed to 3.29's or taller. Check out www.clubgp.com if you haven't already...
