TH400 is a much stronger trans in stock form, can be built/modified to handle more power/torque than a modified TH350.
TH350 came with 6", 9" or 12" tailhousing. TH400 came with 4", 9" or 13" tailhousing.
TH350 has a Dentent/Kickdown cable. TH400 Has electric swtich for Detent/kickdown.
TH350 Bellhousing to trans mount distance = 22-1/4".
TH400 Bellhousing to trans mount distance = 27-15/16".
They have different gear ratios as well.
Trans--- 1st Gear-- 2nd Gear-- 3rd Gear-- 4th Gear-- Reverse--------------
TH350-- 2.52------ 1.52------- 1.00 -----XXX------- 1.94 ---------------
TH400-- 2.48------ 1.48------- 1.00 -----XXX------- 2.07 ---------------

As noted above, they are as different as apples and oranges.

Also, most 400s will bolt up to the same motors that 350s bolt up to and vice versa.

But, some 350s have no comparable 400 bell and vice versa, so there are motors that 350s bolt up to and 400s don't and vice versa.

Some bell types:

1) Chevy...................350 and 400
2) BPO......................350 and 400
3) Monza/Vega...........350 only
4) Multi.....................350 only
5) Jeep (74-79)..........400 only
6) Jeep (thru 73)........400 only
7) Buick/Caddy round..400 only
8) Rolls Royce............400 only
9) Caddy flat top........400 only
10) Jaguar.................400 only

There may be others.
