The Miata is going to be one of the best bang for buck autocross vehicles you can find. Personally I can't get past the looks so I wouldn't buy one but to each his own.

Here is a short list of vehicles I would consider if I was in your shoes. In no particular order


EVO VIII
S2K
WRX
240SX
RX7(3rd gen)
MR2(2nd gen)
Civic Hatchback(EH)

Each of these listed here benefit greatly in handling/cornering and tyre wear if fitted with K-Mac camber and caster kits. Save some of your budget for these.

A friend had VERY good luck when he scored an ex-police car Mustang at an auction. The fuzzmobiles already have some pretty stout underpinnings.
