I am just starting to look into autocross racing and I wanted some opinions on what would be a good car to enter? I have around a 20 grand budget to spend. I would also prefer if the car looked cool. Any thoughts?

Definitely not an Engine Forum question. Not really what this board is oriented toward either. But... You may want to consider a WRX, STI or EVO...


On second thought, I've read your other posts you have made today and decided that I really don't think you are looking for an auto-x car. I think you are just asking questions to ask questions. So.... are you going for a drag car, "cornering/speed car" or an auto-x car? Or are you just asking questions for the sake of asking them?

I am trying to find out different cars for different options of racing and based off the feedback I get I was then going to make a decision, Sorry for the multiple posts I was just trying to research all 3 types and maked an inform decision.

get a pinto and put a 454 in it.

try a C4 Corvette 1984 to 90 ? look for an 85 up with TPI. They can be bought cheap and modified for what you want.

how does a 16 year old get 20Gs to throw into a botomless pit?

If I was said 16y/o I would try several types of racing to see what I enjoyed and/or was good at...before I became an internet racer. Or buy 20 grand worth of popcorn, stickers and mountain dew and watch fast and furious movies

If you seriously had 20G (and I doubt that you do) I would say buy a $10,000 car at most. Because you are going to need a pickup and trailer to get it to the races, money to enter, for gas, tires and all the other cubic money it takes to go racing.

Friend of mine did that back in the late 70's. It was a little nose heavy even with the engine halfway under the cowl but it made the corner from the shutdown lanes to the return road EVERY time!

A few ideas that come to mind. First, I wouldn't spend the whole amount on the car, rather half on the car and other half on aftermarket parts to maximize performance and safety.

The Miata is going to be one of the best bang for buck autocross vehicles you can find. Personally I can't get past the looks so I wouldn't buy one but to each his own.

Here is a short list of vehicles I would consider if I was in your shoes. In no particular order

If you are serious about racing... especially auto cross, rally, or road racing you will become more competitive if you spend most of your money on racing school instead of the latest greatest equipment.

That said......in auto cross the cooper mini is dominant in its stock class, the cooper mini s is strong in its class. The miatas and solstices/skys are epic and will have tons of info to research on forums. All good cars to consider. At first stick to stock classes and never go cheap on tires... After that all you have to do is practice and learn.
