Help;

I have a 62 Catalina, 389, with the "Slim Jim"(Roto-HydraMatic) Transmission. It's giving me fits, with it's leaks, slow shifting from 1st. to 2nd, and non-parts replacement. What's a good tranny to keep this "Wide track" on the road. I'd like to keep it as original as possible, but with all the problems I'm having, it's forcing me to.."Up-Grade". Would a 70's full size Pontiac trans fit my 62? Would I have to change much? Like the drive shaft, shift quadrant, and anything else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first restoration.
