Post What's a good tranny replacement for my 62 Pontiac Catalina?

Help;

I have a 62 Catalina, 389, with the "Slim Jim"(Roto-HydraMatic) Transmission. It's giving me fits, with it's leaks, slow shifting from 1st. to 2nd, and non-parts replacement. What's a good tranny to keep this "Wide track" on the road. I'd like to keep it as original as possible, but with all the problems I'm having, it's forcing me to.."Up-Grade". Would a 70's full size Pontiac trans fit my 62? Would I have to change much? Like the drive shaft, shift quadrant, and anything else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first restoration.

Thanks,
Albert....Riverside, Ca.

You should be able to get just about any GM Automatic to fit up to the 389. The only thing you may have to worry about is the trans mount.

Personally I would select the TH350 unless you opt for overdrive. Then a TH700r is the puppy.

I you plan to put a load of power down you will need to do a little more research.

Hey Albert, If you want to run an overdrive tranny, there are a couple of things to keep in mind the 700r4 will not just bolt up. You will need to get an adapter plate. The 200r4 is made so it fits all the GM brands B.O.P.& Chevy they can be pretty expensive to build. Or you can go with a 350 turbo. Becase your car is a land yacht I would use a long shaft 350. need any more help let me know

Albert,

Lou is right! You can also use a TH400 from the early/mid 70's Gran Prix's. Biggest thing to remember is the 389/400/421/455 bellhousing bolt pattern is Pontiac only. Chevy won't fit without an adaptor plate. You didn't say what you use your Poncho for(or its gear ratios) so as to determine whether or not you need an overdrive. Randy's Ring & Pinion and Richmondgear both have great calculators to help you decide which way to go.
