What's missing from my firewall?
Motor and electric is not my strong side of working on cars. I have two 1959 Oldsmobiles (an 88 and a 98 parts car). Both are missing something from the firewall. Could you help me ID what should be at the end of these wires please.

re: What's missing from my firewall?
I would have said wiper motor ... seeing as how it looks suspiciously absent, and that the leads look like they are approximately the same length and point in that general direction.
Here is a link to Cardone part # 40-106, which is what Autozone's site said is the one that fits. I might be wrong, though ... the wire colors don't seem to match. |

re: What's missing from my firewall?
I'm suggesting the regulator because of the "forketh wire"
& they were mounted on fire walls back then {yes?} I had seen on Power Block today that you can get a single pole alternator that looks like a generator for a mere $400. I like watching the "animated ad show " for about 10 minuets then I have to puke because they have spent a years salary in 20 minuets R R

re: What's missing from my firewall?
Wiper motor wires are---2 blues and a black--(I think--too lazy to out to the garage and check)---these are the switch wires, I think that the Olds would have the tan or brown power wire just like a Chebby.

re: What's missing from my firewall?
Doc here,
Im thinkin' here..(and that induces neuron misfires..and hence an Excedrin moment.. ) That the COLOR and location of those wires to the area of the Ballast resistor in the background..Tends me to believe at some point, an HEI was installed.. AND those wires are for switched Ignition power, Ballast drop down , secondary Ignition from the "R" or "I" terminal on the solenoid, and Ground , For a Points type Ignition system Remote coil..and have been abandoned.. IF that proves to be the case..INSULATE them, then tie them back, Put them in a Clear tubing with a small note, "Old Coil wires" so in future you or a new owner knows what they were for..use BIG tie wraps on both ends of the clear tubing and tie it back on a close harness bundle.. My Buck's worth..(used to be a nickel..but ya know..inflation has it goin' on.. )Post back and tell us what it turns out to be..(Otherwise..It's like having all but the last chapter to a good Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle Novel..Who Done it???) Doc here, It may be my poor eyesight..(or Felony Fudge again.. But in the second photo, it looks like the regulator (which seems to be missing a cover) is on the lower Right side of the photo.. What it looks like to me , the field relay sticking up and the slide in terminal connector is facing to the right.. However, the photo is not too clear in that corner to me at least..(geeze, had I known I'd live this long, I'd never spent the "summer of Love" in the Height Ashbury..) and it could be one of them thar Flashie backs.. ("Holy Hallucinations Batman...What foul evil plot is this??"..... "It's the Work of the Joker and his Foul evil Brown Acid, Boy wonder..Don't use it..It's bad"..) ....and / or it may be something else. It could be where the "Flux Capacitor" went

re: What's missing from my firewall?
Doc, Wow!
That cracked me up I had the hair and the VW van in the 80's, but did no brown acid. Only did citric acid. Far out. I would like change the system from generator to alternator. So if I understand correctly, the regulator is found within an alternator, making it unecessary to buy a new regulator. Right? I believe that the object without a cover in pic 2 is the relay as you said. The object with the cover in pic 1 (parts car) is wired the same. I'll take some different angles tonight and post them. re: What's missing from my firewall?
Ok, here it is. The firewall from far and zoomed in.
Doc, I'll spare the zoom out, zoom in, zoom out, zoom in.... I would like to crank this thing to see if it runs. Would the voltage regulator be necessary for this, or is there a way to temporarily bypass it? There is presently no generator (it's gone) so it would just run off the battery, if I can be that lucky. Paul. |

re: What's missing from my firewall?
I thought I just had a revelation ... but it didn't turn out as good as I had hoped.
I had recalled that "Grouch" had scanned and uploaded a shop manual for an old Oldsmobile ... but it turns out to be a 1949 Oldsmobile. The thread http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/old...ighlight=manual mentions a Mr K. Hardy who also has a bunch of scanned (Chevy?) manuals. That might be worth persuing? |
