What's the purpose of this piece?

Most of you will recognize this as a transmission mount (this one happens to be from an F-150). But I've always wondered what the purpose is of that handle shaped piece shown on the left. My wild guess is that it is a safety feature to prevent the total uncoupling of the mount in the event the rubber damper built into the mount might somehow come apart. Anybody got the "real" scoop on what these are for?
