A sleeper is a muscle car or hot rod that looks outwardly like your grandma's old sedan but is a whole lot faster. No mag wheels, no loud mufflers, etc.

Don't forget the ultimate sleeper accessories, a baby seat cinched up in the back and a "Child on board" sign in the back window.
The baby seat goes on the passenger side to add a little weight over the right rear tire to aid traction.

Many a 440 diplomat, that would be wicked!!! A good sleeper is one that is rotted out on the sides, corroded/and/or missing hubcaps, but will blow away anybody who scoffs at it!!

Sleepers are one of my favorite cars and I have built a few over the years and am currently building another.
As said above it's a car that outwardly looks like nothing more than basic transportation. Tire size is kept conservative side, and will have a reasonably quite exhaust. Dual exhaust is something that can't often be hidden, but it will be understated, tucked under the bumper and usually rusty tips. Fancy wheels and tires are usually a giveaway that something may have been done to the car and either factory hub caps or no caps at all and blackwall tires are used (dog dish caps would look good on your car). Here are some of examples. The 64 Ford Custom that I'm currently building. A 2dr sedan, bench seat it will also have poverty caps and no engine displacement emblems. The engine is a bored and stroked 352 now displacing 401 CI with Thunderbird Tri-power, C6 and 9" rear with 3.50 gears. These are good examples of the sleepers from the 60s and 70s. My old 65 Chevy Biscayne 2dr sedan looked like grandmas car. Presentable 2 dr sedan, blackwalls factory dog dish hub caps. Under the paint....bored 350 with dual quads, 4 speed and 12 Bolt rear end. |

A couple of others that can also pass as sleepers......... My 68 El Camino (shop truck) it has dual exhaust and the stock hub caps. The paint is pretty faded and the front marker lights say 307. It has a 402 Big Block out of a 72 Cop Car, Muncie 4 speed and 12 Bolt rear end.
My 77 Mustang II (current daily driver). First off NOBODY expects a Mustang II to be quick to begin with, so this one can get away with aftermarket wheels. It has single exhaust (but no one picks up on the fact that it's 2 1/2 inch ......it will likely be changed to 3" in the near future). The V8 emblems have been removed so outwardly it's nothing special. Open the hood and there is a typical mid 70's small block with a 302 decal on the air cleaner. It has steel valve covers with an old emissions decal on it. What it is really is a .040 351W, with Edelbrock Aluminum Heads , intake cam and carb. The name was ground off the intake and the brackets hide the names on the heads. Everything is painted ford blue and pretty much passes for stock even the ported exhaust manifolds. The transmission is a top loader 4 speed and the rear is an 8" Posi. |

I have a friend that has a 1994 Z28 camaro and he put RS emblems on it so when ricers and pony's pull up beside him they think it is a 3.8
that is probably considered a sleeper even though it is a camaro |

and would it still be considered a sleeper with a "upgraded" interior? .. mainly just sound system ..
unfortunately mines an automatic =\ .. how hard is it to change one to floor shift? or did they even make a floor shift diplomat?. it would be nice to put in a ratchet shifted automatic but it would make it look less of a sleeper wouldnt it? Here's a link to a site with people who share ideas on hopping up Diplomats. There may be some ideas there. Good luck.
