What's that smell?

I have sanded 20 year old paint and smelled an odor
that's very common everytime I sand old paint.
Is it possible that the smell is solvents?
Can it possibly be there after 20 yrs and the
paint is mostly worn away?
What is that smell?????

evaporation of sweat maybe? No, actually I know exactly what you're talking about and it's common to the old laquer jobs that were done years ago.

That's it!!! I knew I rememberd it from somewhere.
Boy I am getting old, I did lacquer in the 70's.
But I smelled that same smell when I sanded my car yesterday
that has that acrylic enamel with Lazer dry in it.
