What's your worst accident?
I was 19 and a sr. in high school. My girlfriend of 2 years (puppy love) just broke up with me, so obviously, being a complete mess, I decided to go for a drive to clear my head (and my eyes). My first car I was still making payments on was a '92 Pontiac Sunbird 2.0 / 5 spd. Yea, back then I thought that car was the shizz.
Anyway I was doing about 60 in a 45 and slowed at a red lighted intersection. Light went green before I got there, so something about listening to Rage Against The Machine told me to downshift and floor it cause I got a fast break (no red light). I smiled for all of about 3 seconds before I saw the pickup truck 40 yards ahead. I locked the brakes and seemingly skidded forever. Being a driver of VERY little experience, focusing on the intersection and not a stopped truck in my path, and not realizing that you can't steer if the tires aren't rolling anymore, The impact sent the truck flying forward, so he hit the car in front of him. . . .and he hit the car in front of him, and so on, damaging a total of 5 cars in one smash. It sounded more like a machine gun going off than just one loud smash. They were all stopped behind the lead car trying to turn left into a station. Since my hood was now in front of the windshield, I couldn't see anything I'd done until I got out of the car to look. After seeing if everyone was alright, I sat back in my car and tried to turn on the radio again before remembering that my battery was shattered. The worst part was before my folks got there, my now ex-girlfriend was coming home from the mall and stopped to see if I was ok. Worst day of my life. Let's hear yours. |

re: What's your worst accident?
Stepping out of my '65 F100 and seein that perfect, brushed aluminum grill, smashed and twisted was the worst.
Traffic going the opposite direction was stopped. Guy stops to leave opening from a road, and waves a chick out. She doesn't look, just goes - I don't know how you miss a large, old Ford truck, but she did. Smashed her little car in the rear quarter panel causing it to swing around to face the direction it just came from. It wasn't even her car, she was test driving one and going back into the dealership. She went home in her car and my '65 is gone. My other wreck involved my Bronco. SAME situation. Girl didn't look and pulled out in front of me. She looked up and saw Bronco grill at her window and froze. Totalled her lil Honda and I drove the Bronco home. |

re: What's your worst accident?
I was driving my second car a little Riley 1.5 and was hit in the rear quarter by a car exiting a garage. I spun round twice and
stopped in the other lane looking up at a double decker bus. There was no seatbelt law back then but that day I had put it on. If not I would have kissed the steering wheel with my face. To cap it the daughter of the woman who was driving had seen it and came down to the scene and started to beat me.She had a dreadful cold and was yelling at the top of her voice "Doo dried do dill my mudder" My little car was ruined. |

which one?
I was going through town one day, minding my own business, at a brisk 45 mph (in a 45 mph speed zone)
An older driver in front of me hit the brakes and stopped at the top of a hill to let some pedestrians cross, and of course, I didn't see him until i reached the top of the hill... I hit him doing 40, and of course, he get's out and starts cursing and yelling, and all that crap, and I try to say "the pedestrians have to wait for the signal - it's a green light!!!!!!!! you stopped on a green light!!!" Well, he had the argument that I was a young whipper-snapper who didn't care for anybody - called his insurance co. the cops, and a tow truck - I LOST MY LICENSE FOR A YEAR!!!! He told the police I was a neglagent driver, and that he was worried that I would hit the pedestrians... he told the cops he was trying to stop ME from hitting people. What an AZZhole. $5000 to the Ins. Co. and fines, and he of course was treated very well - he was a hero. The SOB tried to take me to court again too after the Ins. Co. totaled his car, saying I that he was unable to get to his doctors, his home, with no car. I spent the better end of 4 months on the phone with my lawyer (had to get one) and 4 court appearances. I wish I could sue that son of a *****. |

re: What's your worst accident?
I was 18 and had just broken up with a current lay. Her brother and I were running some back roads near the Missouri river. After the third joint I got to playing around and was drifting the corners in my 86 trans-am. Most corners were easy. Down shift to second from fourth and blip the throttle to set the car in the corner. When the car set, counter steer and feather the throttle to control the rear steer. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a deer standing at the side of the road. I had forgotten about the sharp corner that will take you to the boat landing and I took the outside line to the corner, it was supposed to be inside, and by the time I realized what was happening I had set the car to deep. The front was pushing to much and I tried to get the rear to come around a little further but the car just couldn't respond fast enough and off the long side it went. There was nothing in the way of the corn rows when the car ran up a boulder about the size of a small car. The front hit with a crunch and the headlights were broken out. All was quiet for a few seconds, seemed like minutes to me . I had thought the car came to a rest and I was thinking off getting out when I noticed the stars were still moving across my line of sight. I braced for the impact and saw nothing but corn, then stars then corn again. I asked the brother of the lost girl if he was alive and he responded with a rather cheerful tone. I had was trying to get out but realized the car was still lying on the drivers side. When the passenger had lifted the door it counter acted the balancing act and the car came to rest on all four wheels. It had somersaulted twice before touching the ground, the car stopped 60 feet from the place it had left the road way. No one was hurt. We even walked three miles from the scene to a buddy's house. When we arrived there, we began playing some video games while he dressed to see the car. By the time we had reached the scene the car had been stripped of every usable part except the the engine and trans as well as the rear diff. Still don't know who was responsible. I miss that car, Sold it for some computer stuff and a bag of you know what.

re: What's your worst accident?
I was leaving work about 5 months ago. Driving a safety yellow 2001 saturn sc2 at about 40 mph. Heading out of town just before the end of the speed zone. I look ahead and a minivan is stopped at a side street. It creaps forward pauses. I'm in a long straitaway, so figure he's got to see me. After pauses a few seconds he pulls out in front of me. I slam my brakes. I turn into a plastic javalin.... Hit him right between the wheels and spin around. My air bags pop, and my hood flys up in my face.
I think I lost consciousness for a little while. Got out of my car and walk up to the guy, an older gentle man. I ask if he's ok, and he says yes, and then hes says "I didn't see you...." I look at my totalled yellow saturn, and the long straitaway, and just walk to the other side of the side road, and lean on the guard rail. I got a nice ambulance ride due to head and neck pain, and quite disoriented. A couple hours in the hospital and the they release me with no x rays, and no tests. After seeing family doc week later turns out I had whiplash.. Good side is his insurance paid for all my expenses, including a rental. I just could not get over the I didn't see you, seemed more like he saw me and punched it to get across before I got there, and failed miserably. Nothing horrible bad, just irronic, because the saturn replaced my toyota pickup that my wive was in an accident with. When I brought it home I remember joking about how if anyone says they didn't see it coming they where lying. Jim |

re: What's your worst accident?
Never been in a wreck off the race track but have had a few bad ones in the last few years on track.
I was exiting corner four on the high groove passing the car in 2nd place when he for no apparent reason climbed the track , his front bumper hit my door, and sent me into the wall. Just missing the softer, better for the car tire barrier, I hit the wall on a 45 degree angle at somewhere near 60-65 MPH. The impact was so hard the car lifted in the back and spun a 180 then hitting the rear drivers quarter on the wall. A slower speed than the original impact but nevertheless it still kinda hurt. In the end I was fine but the car was a complete wreck. We had to re-clip the front and replaced the frame from the drivers seat back. Two weeks of hard work from my crew, and myself the car was ready to race. Since the car has won 8 mains in the past two seasons. For that reason I think the wreck was the best thing I did to the car. Or atleast thats what I tell myself. If I would have just backed off the gas it wouldn't have ended up so bad. bonuts |

re: What's your worst accident?
Back in '86 I was sitting at a traffic light in town (in a Chebbie Citation) when I heard tires squawling. An older full size truck hit us full bore in the rearend. He had only 1 brake on the truck and it was estimated he was doing over 50 mph. He hit us, shoved us into the car in front of us, My then wife (Weimers mom) hit the windshield breaking it and embedding glass in her head and had glass in her eyes. We should have had seat belts on to eliminated that happening. The rear shelf on the Citation came forward and hit the front seat. Weimer was in the back seat. If he had on a seat belt he probably would have had serious injuries or possibly been decapitated. Just luckily when he was propelled forward he went down and the shelf went over the top of his head. If he hadn't the shelf was right at neck height. The guy that hit us took off running necause of a parole violation and to this day they never found him. Weimer was alright and his mother and I had a severe case of whiplash. Got a few bucks out of it but not enough. The main thing is we were ok. To this day if I'm driving and hear brakes squeal it just stands the hair up on the back of my neck.

re: What's your worst accident?
It was 1983 and I was 17 yrs old. We lived in GA at the time and Dad and myself drove to Albany so he could have a root canal. He said he would be heavily drugged and would need me to drive him home afterwards.
He was very trusting of me and told me to drive to the mall while he was being operated on and pick him up later that afternoon. Great. After cruising Albany all afternoon I pulled into a gas station to fill the Duster up with gas so I could drive him directly home without stops when I picked him up. There was a 60 something C/10 with no bed on it and a semi truck wheel and tire strapped to the frame parked in front of me at the pumps. After filling the Duster with gas the C/10 and I were ready to pull out of the gas station at the same time or so I thought. When he pulled away from the pump in front of me and headed towards the road to pull out I stayed right behind him as I could see the intersection just down from the station was red making it easy for both of us to pull out without traffic. As soon as he approached the road he threw the truck in reverse without warning and backed up quickly. It happened so fast I threw the Duster into reverse and went for the horn as I floored it to avoid the collision. The Duster Stalled and a flat spot in the horn prevented it from blowing until too late. When the horn finally blew the guy was right on top of me and he slammed on his brakes stopping just short of the car and for a split second I thought I was ok until the semi-truck tire strapped to the frame broke loose and flew into the hood damaging the grille and punching in the nose of the hood. The guy had intended to pull forward and back up to the air hose located next to the gas station and air up his truck tire. He failed to look behind before backing up and claimed he had no insurance. When the guy said he had no insurance and no money on him the gas station attendant was willing to call the police on my behalf but it was getting late in the day and I did not want my father to be worried about me after coming out of surgery so I let him go and left to pick up my father. I did not tell him about it until the next day because he was really groggy and in allot of pain and I did not want him upset. The next day he was pretty pissed and wanted to drive an hour back to albany and look for that SOB but I talked him out of it. Being only 17 and not to wise to the ways of the world I should have called the guys bluff and offered to call the cops. I bet he would have coughed up some money to get the hood re-painted. Years later somebody rear-ended my Dad's 23 foot boat when it was being towed back from the lake. Same type of scuzzball in a ragged out 68 Delta 88 said he had no insurance and no money. Dad said he was going to walk across the street and call the cops: Voila, the guys girlfriend whips out her check book and rights out a check to cover the estimated damage to the boat for $200.00. Moral to the story: Scuzzballs are terrible drivers and always call their bluff! That was an interesting story too as dad did not belive me when I said I thought somebody bumped us from behind until he saw the wheel cover from the car that hit the boat roll by us and land in the parking lot in front of us! The scuzzball did not get out of his car to check for damage until dad got out and confirmed we had been hit. He was going to wait and see if we would drive off none the wiser! Scuzzballs! |

re: What's your worst accident?
I wasn't driving in this wreck, but it was pretty damn scary none-the-less...
My best friend's dad had passed away in his sleep early Monday morning...we buried him on Wednesday. My buddy called me up on Friday afternoon and asked if I wanted to go riding around and clear our heads. I said "sure". Well he picked me up in his 69 F-100 with a built 351 in it. It wasn't a show truck, but it was a good looking truck. We headed out to the City Pond (local water reservoir) to do some light mudding. The truck was a 2 wheel drive so any decent mudding was impossible. Well, the road to the back side of the bond is an old gravel road. we made it to the back just fine - hit a few mud holes and then headed on our way back out. He was a bit of a show off and I guess he thought we needed some "excitement". He rounded the last curve and downshifted...nailed the gas and the truck got sideways. When we caught traction, we were almost completely sideways...the truck shot straight toward one of those cement sewer thingys...you know the concrete mounds with a sewer access door on the top..well, at the last minute, he managed to swerve the front end as to not get a head-on impact....the passenger side front bumper caught the concrete pile and shot the truck in a spiral upwards..we flew about 20 feet through the air and landed on the roof of the passenger side roof..flipped it 3 more times - every time it landed on the same place - the passenger side roof (where I was). The truck came to a rest on the passenger side... Once we stopped moving, my buddy asked if I was ok - I said yeah, I think...he climbed up and out the driver's side - I mentioned that he could help me out seeing as how he nearly killed me. We got out and on the ground..he walked around and kicked the hood of his truck...th headlights came back on..I started laughing and he asked what the hell I was laughing at...I just said "Can we do that again???" All he could do was smile. We were very lucky. Neither of us had our seat belts on...but someone was looking out for us...could it be his dad? For several months after the wreck, I had some red marks on my shoulders that looked like finger marks or impressions....looking back, I don't ever remember leaving my seat..makes you wonder doesn't it? Everybody be safe and I'll see ya the next go round..... |
