I am having a 69 camaro built from ground up. I know they had a lot of problems with wheel hopping because of the light rear end. the motor will be a beefed up 454, with 4 speed. Is there something that can be done now to help eliminate this that would not cost me an arm & a leg?

You can look up a company called Caltracs ( http://calvertracing.com ) . They sell a real nice traction bar setup for leaf spring cars. On average they run about $350.00 and work very very well.

I read in a post that they made allot of noise when just driving down the street and hitting rough pavement. Is that true.

Similar devices are made by Competition Engineering (the Slide-a-Link) and Smith Racecraft (called Max Trax).

A simple but properly built Slapper Bar (again Competition Engineering, only company that makes these correctly) may work for you if this isn't going to get sticky drag tires.

Depends on if you set the preload loose or tight.

The Slide-a-Link is quiet.

I'm old school, ya'll are talking over my head. I'm wanting something that will not compromise a smooth ride, but when I punch it ,I get full traction with out wheel hop. I won' run this car on a legal track. It will be used just for cruising, and the usual stoplight testers.

I don't know. I've never heard of that happening. They are designed for drag racing more than street use so there may be an issue with them making noise on the street. Another option you have is just regular slapper type traction bars. They work ok.

I ran slapper bars (unjust name IMO) on a 70 Nova with single leaf rear springs, and they were quite. These were high quality ones that replaced the lower spring pad. It totally eliminated rear wheel hop. I raced that Nova every Wednesday night and on weekends at the Abilene Texas drag strip the entire time I was stationed there. The only down side was after a while the snubber started bending the leaf spring where it contacted it. Also over time the spring perches on the 10 bolt axle started to roll off the axle tubes. I however never did break the 10 bolt gear set, in spite of me trying.

This is the reason I said that Comp Engineering is the only company I've seen that makes these correctly. The snubber should hit DIRECTLY UNDER the front spring eye, and not out on the leaf so it doesn't try to bend the spring.

Before my car was tubbed I had a slide a link and it worked great. You can loosen the preload when your not at the track and mine was quite.When your at the track you can preload it pretty good for good traction and to correct any launch problems. In the slide a link you will also have to replace the front spring bushing with the solid aluminum bushing supplied in the kit.

Some Gen-1 Firebirds came with rear springs that had more leaves in the front than in the rear. This was done to combat wheel hop. I think some kind of old Dodge drag cars had the same setup.

Lakewood makes an inexpensive traction bar that replaces the lower spring mount and also has the shock mounts. I have a pair on my 68 Camaro, No noise and no wheel hop. They have been on it for at least 30 years and still work great.
