I'm getting close to setting the pinion angle between the trans and the rear end. What is the proper procedure for this step? Before the rear axel is loaded with the car weight? After the car is resting an all four tires at normal ride height?

Is the pinion angle always best at 3 degrees? Are there exceptions to this spec? Is, what and why?

Set it with it sitting on the ground, do a search about the rear end angle there is PLENTY of good information out here on the web, read several so you get a good understanding of the procedure ....... it is a simple adjustment and easy to understand ..

If you are doing leaf springs, and blow it shims can be had, I offer this as bank up information .. the phasing of the u joints is very important so keep that in mind as you go ..

My understanding is that the pinion angle is dependent upon the transmission tailshaft angle. The two need to be in the same plane. So if the tail of the transmission angles DOWN 4 degrees, the nose of the rear end (pinion) should angle UP 4 degrees.

And in terms of "best time" to set the angle, you'll probably fine you need to set it a couple of times. Once early on as the car is going together (to locate and/or fabricate other suspension components) and again at the very end, just before putting it on the road when your ride height is established for certain.
