Check the key switch, See if you have 12v there, and then 12V on the terminal that goes to the starter,
You may have a nuetral safty switch too, Automatic? on the trans or bottom of column. Stick shift? Switch on the clutch pedal linkage, behind dash.

Sounds like the net safety switch

You should be able to see the purple wire at the neutral safety switch on the steering column, under the dashboard. There should also be a purple wire with white going to your ignition switch. Jump these 2 wires while turning the key. Make sure the transmission is in park or neutral. If it turns over then, your safety switch is out of adjustment, or defective.

1st question - You said you get "nothing". Does that mean you also don't get any dash lights, or is it just the starter that does not work?

The neutral safety switch is a good place to start troubleshooting if its only a non-start problem. If jumping the NSS does not resolve the problem or you cannot get any power at all, then it might be the metal rack that connects the ignition key/switch to the electrical switch lower in the column. If that small rack breaks then turning the key does not move the electrical switch on the column and you can't get any ignition-operated electrics to come on.
