Where Did All the Crap Come From?

I just shot the undersides of my Nova's trunk lid and hood. I cleaned and cleaned some more, then cleaned more before 'lightly' tacking the surfaces. I was hoping to get a good enough finish on the underside so I wouldn't have to cut and buff, but too much stuff landed on the surfaces. I guess is't just a bit more work for me. The SPI Universal clear was perfect - not a run or hint of orange peel. Too bad the environment wasn't as good.

It's important to hit all the nooks and crannies with some compressed air for a while before you do the wax and grease remover cleanup, and use a tack rag. Decklids and hoods can hold a lot of garbage between the inner structure and the skin that later gets out when your spraying. Another thing is watch what clothes you wear-sometimes 80% of the dirt problems can be traced to stuff falling off of you. Wear a good suit if possible. And clean air in the spray area.

Are you painting it in a horizontal position? laying flat.
I have the same problem when doing that and I now
hang my hoods vertical for spraying, that has helped a lot.
I also reduced my exhaust air flow and position the panel
so the air doesn't go directly accross the panel.
That also helped me a lot.
Filtering the incoming make-up air really helps too.
And don't forget that a lot of the dust comes from the painter,
wear a painters suit, that helps.

Don't do like Bondoking, he thinks painting naked keeps the dust down.
And then he sticks to everything, what a mess!!!!

I hate painting the inside of hoods and trunklids for just that reason. I now take them and stand them on each edge and use compressed air to blow into every hole several times. You can make it look like everything is out of there, then move them, and something else comes loose. I think it is a conspiracy run by the manufacturers.

Another trick that can help, I use sometimes. When you mix the epoxy primer, you will have some left over. I will pour it inside the decklid or hood, and then turn it up on each edge. Allow the primer to flow into the edges. That way, the stuff that is stuck in the edges, that only comes loose when you are spraying, is stuck there for good.
