Hello. I've been struggling with this oil pan for my sbc.
I have I bought a one piece felpro oil pan gasket but the pan that I have has a bunch a ribs on the sealing surface in between each bolt hole.
Which doesn't let the gasket sit flush.
I know I've seen some oil pan that have those ribs pushed downward but that will let it sit flush.but for what years? What do I look it up for?
It's going on my 74 sbc. Driver side dipstick. 2 piece rear main?
The ribs in the pan rail don't hurt a thing, the gasket will compress to accommodate them. You're worried about nothing. Just make sure the metal around each bolt hole in the pan is flat and not curled down from squeezing the old gasket. Just do a little hammer bodywork on the bolt holes to prep the pan. This is important because the holes in the gasket are where the gasket compression limiter inserts are.
Install the gasket bone dry, with only small dabs of RTV silicone on the corner nubs that fit into the block and timing cover, just like the instructions say.
We stock a USA pan gasket that is 1 pc rubber for SBC up to 1979 and then the 1980-85. It has no ribs, just load limit washers. Detroit gasket had these years ago.
Thanks you every one. I ended up getting an oil pan with the ribs pushed downward instead of up. Gasket sits flush on oil pan. Bolts looking like they'll only catch two threads on the block. Should be fine or arp oil pan stud kit?
Typically that is all the farther you will get them to install with just finger pressure, but they will compress the gasket when tightened and end up with 5 threads in the block.
Normally have to tighten the four corner 5/16" bolts some first, then hand tighten the rest on the sides, then recheck the corner bolts again and then final tension the side bolts.
was the original problem that the bolts are too short??
grab some 1/4" X 3/4" long bolts and maybe some washers at the hardware store..
no need for ARP priced stuff on the oil pan..
