Where to get some practice paint

I'd like to practice some painting skills on some sheet metal, pedal cars, etc so I only want small quantities. I want to try my hand at some pearlesence (sp?), large metal flakes, etc.

Just curious if I p&b shops end up with small quantities of left over paints that they might be willing to sell or give away. I figure there probably isn't much in wasted materials these days. Anyone ever tried this?

I think some shops do end up with extra paint, especially if they don't have a solvent recycler. Find a low tech hole-in-the-wall, and chances are they will be glad to have you take certain portions of their excess off their hands.

Oh my God, both shops and paint stores. There is ALWAYS paint that they mismatched or made to much. Not only that, they are DYEING to give it away or sell cheap being it costs to dispose of it.

We had a big cabinet full of left over paint at a used car dealer I worked at. We didn't have a mixing machine and did mostly completes. Not having a mixing machine, they may have to buy either pints, quarts, or gallons from the paint supplier and probably have some left over. At shops I worked at with thier own mixing system, we would try to mix as close as possible to what we thought we needed, and since we mixed our own paint we would divide up the formula if needed to have as little waste as possible, but still there is always left over from some jobs. And like Brian said, paint suppliers generally have paint on the shelf that was mixed wrong or never picked up that they sell for reduced price.
