where to source junkyard 8.2 gm rear end parts

My brother Paul is about finished with his 68 Nova build. The whole car is completed minus a few misc. interior parts and the rear end. The car was originally an inline 6 and has the stock rear end. Aren't the stock rear end inline 6 Nova's an 8.2" ten bolt?

He would like a 3:42- 3:73 gear in it along with a posi carrier. What vehicles could I source these 8.2 parts from in a junk yard? I know the best thing to do would be find an 75' up 8.5 Nova rear end for added durability but this is a weekend warrior cruiser.

Good luck finding those parts for the 8.2 in a junk yard. A posi in the 8.2 was very rare. All Chevy 10 bolt rear ends from '65 to '70 are the 8.2. Chevelles used the 8.2 from '64 to '72.

Well he is on a budget so instead of hunting for all the parts we may get a
1995 and up Explorer rear end (8.8) that already has 31 spline axles, and 3:73 gears, with disc brakes for a few hundred bucks. All that would be required fitment wise is to cut and relocate the spring perches and have the axles re drilled for a chevy pattern wheel.

Just did that dance, although my issue is slightly differential than yours
The 69 impala I got came with an open 2.73. I wanted to stay open in the heavy ol beast. I tightened everything up on my 67 charger so it all got to the pavement and spent 99% of my time changing parts. Finding parts for 8.2 in yards, all the luck friend, and when you go from a 2 series gear set to a 3 series dont forget to order the .3" spacer for behind your ring. I'm hoping those little diffs can take some pounding

An 8.5" 10-Bolt or the 8.8" will be much better, price, parts availability, strength etc..
8.2" parts are getting very hard to find.
10-Bolt Info here>> http://www.oldsmobility.com/10bolt-tech.htm

I agree that the 8.5 woudl be a much better choice. Parts for the 8.5 are much easier to find and cheaper.
