white smoke and engine dropping revs when put into gear

Hi guys,
changed my heads to world products sportsman IIs, my engine has; comp cams XE262, performer airgap intake, edelbrock 1406 (600cfm elec choke) carb, 9.5:1 compression

now, I get puffs of white smoke out of the exhaust when idling and a puff of white smoke through the carb when I shut it off (like smoke machine smoke), does that sound like an antifreeze leak?

also, (with engine warm and choke open) I've adjusted the idle mixture and set the idle at 900rpm, then when I put it in gear it drops to 600 and sounds like it's trying to die, then I take it out of gear it goes up to 1100 and goes up and down around that figure, any ideas what to try?

does anyone have a similar set-up with the 262 and edelbrock carb? if so what jets, rods and springs are you running?

thanks for any help,

Andy
P.S. I did do a search and didn't find anything particularly helpful.

Andybird, you don't say if you have an auto box. If you do, check the modulator cos if it's knackered the carb will suck up transmission fluid and burn it off. It's worth a look.

If the smoke smells sweet, then it's antifreeze, and your headgaskets have gone on vacation. Another possibility would be a lack of sealant on the head bolts that got into the water jacket.
