There are maybe a half dozen good builders throughout the country and it looks like you're only an hour or so away from Chris (CK).

you'll like the 200 4r. I'm sure that is what was originaly in the el camino. Make sure to ask/tell them that your running a big block. That way you know your getting enough clutch and holding capasity for the tq that motor will deliver. Most failures are going to happen in third and fourth gears where the real strain will happen. I built mine with extra clutches in forward, direct, overrun and fourth clutch asseblies. Used the extra wide band for second and use the bigger boost valves. There is extra tricks they can use to give it more life. 10 vane relieved pump with hardened rings, bigger servo and ect. You need to ask alot of question. You maybe close to a good builder, I wasn't. None of my shops around here would do it for me. They only wanted to sell me what they though i should have. IF CK is close to you, why don't you go talk to them in person. Then you can have a face to face and ask question. They have question for you to. Go for it. I even built my own deep pan and used a 4l60 filter.

Ck performance is about 2 hours away and this new one I found was performance built transmission. They are about 2:30 mins. SO I have two people I can go to.
Also Yes my El Camino came with a 200r4, but it blew up when I was tuning my big block. So I had a turbo 350 that came with the engine the guy sold me. So now I have a Grand National 8.5 rear with 4.10 and no overdrive ugg. Not good at all |

So you have any idea what gave out on the tranny ? That is why i say, the 200 4r has to be built better than just stock for your big block. It will need a better forward shaft and other internal parts, more clutches, with better clutches than just stock components. Remember, your tranny will only be as good as your weakest component. Don't tell yourself that you can get buy with something less, because there will be a time when you WILL get on it, and that big block tq will take care of it. Maybe not the first time, but it will happen. You will only get what you pay for. If you have any knowledge of trannies, you could rebuild your own like I did. But you have to study about the 200 4r. Having the TV system set up right and having higher presure is half the problem. I still believe You need to talk to a good tranny builder. Good luck

I am no tranny expert. That is why I am buying one from a reputable source. I am not sure what the problem of my original 200r4 was, but I had a turbo 350 so I just swapped them out and bam done.
