re: who makes the better tools

There is no single best tools everyone has a speciality, for example Channellock makes the best groove joint plier, Vise Grip makes the best locking pliers, Cresent makes the best adj wrench, etc.

I voted Snap-on. The dealer comes to the shop. I used to swear by craftsman. Get a Snap-on philips screw driver and a Craftsman and compare how they fit in the screw head. I did and that is why I buy Snap-on now.

re: who makes the better tools

I use the Craftsman and others at home as my daughters and wife don't know how to put them away. They end up where they worked.

re: who makes the better tools

New guy at work asked me to borrow something today, I felt bad and said sure. I remember those days just starting out. Rule of thumb if you borrow it more than once,it's something you should have and need to buy your own!

re: who makes the better tools

Twisted, I was just joking and actually it depends entirely on who and the situation at the time. We have an unwritten rule around the job here that if you damage or lose someone else's tools you will replace it as soon as the truck arrives. I like that line about borrowing more than once and I think I will print that out and put it on my box. About "blowing up" ratchets, I know everyone has their favorite but we really put them to the test here. Sometimes we are faced with a repair(mining equipment) that will be in a location where it will be impossible to reach with an air hose so everything must be done by hand and when dealing with something like a D11 bulldozer this can and often does require more "pull" on a ratchet handle than one can get if using it "properly" so out comes the cheater pipe and it is abuse time! This happens a lot because it is all we have to work with in that situation and down time is FAR more expensive than tools. I have even seen guys whacking the handles of ratchets with big hammers! although I think that is going too far and I would not do that myself. But the bottom line here is we learned long ago what breaks and what doesn't and that is the reason Snap-On is by far the most popular here. I am not saying Snap-On or any other tool will hold up to this kind of abuse I am just saying that for years I have seen Snap-Op ratchets do things that NO tool should be able to survive and I would be confident in putting them up against ANY thing else out there and in fact we have tried them against most.

re: who makes the better tools

When someone asks to borrow one of my tools my standard reply is
"I promised my wife I wouldn't loan any more of my tools"
Now, you wouldn't want me to get in trouble would ya?

re: who makes the better tools

My dad told me about a guy he new that was one of the top techs a a local bmw dealer, this guy was fast and he was also snapons best customer, he had a drawer for each job with the tools required for that job only,
like for a head gasket job on a certain make he had a whole drawer with only the tools needed for that job in order. He made like 100k a year but worked his *** off and was all about speed. He must of had 20 sets of somethings!

re: who makes the better tools

there is a BIG problem with unspoken & un written rules if no one speaks up no one else knows about them
Ive had too many tools never come back and sometimes the guy never comes back!

I never worked in a situation like old red but I might bend in that case the rest can pound their way to the tool store

nowadays if you want to borrow something I come with it and you pay for both if I could buy it and had the for sight to then so can you

I had a shop supervisor chew me out because I dident have "tamper proof torx bits" after he informed me that I needed to buy a set I asked to borrow his ....seems he dident have any either then I told him to have sex with himself

I know you were kidding..........

The "blowing up" ratchet I was referring to is when you go to loosen something and the darn thing just gives out.

I've had this with about 6 Craftsman ratchets 1/4 & 3/8". I really like their 1/2" flex head long handle ratchet though!

re: who makes the better tools

My rules are that you may borrow a tool three times. After that it is time for you to sign up with the tool man on "the never never plan " just like the rest of us. You best return my tools in good condition as they were when you borrowed them.
