re: who makes the better tools

I hate having to go and borrow something. I have come to respect the tools that some one else worked their butt off to buy. And when i do have to borrow something i hate the feeling of being in debt to that person.

On the other hand i don't feel as bad when you need a special tool to do a job and you need it. But if i need it more then once then i need to get one for my self.

Don't ask to borrow my 1/2" socket. You should have your own.

Lifetime warrenty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am not a pro mechanic, but I do have a few Mac tools I bought thru E Bay, one ratchet in particular must have been exchanged thru a Mac dealer for a new one because it looks like someone used it as a hammer as the chrome is peeling in big flakes.
If I chase down a Mac truck and try to exchange it for a brand spanking new ratchet , do you all think the guy will happily exchange it , or even exchange it at all ?
Thanks

re: who makes the better tools

Scrot I have no idea how a Mac dealer would deal with that but our Snap-On dealer will exchange ratchets that are totally destroyed. I have seen ratchets and wrenches exchanged that were bent and I mean BENT! You will not do that unless you severely abuse a tool but he will exchange no questions asked. But you have to consider we do a LOT of business with this guy so he may very well be bending the rules as much as we are bending the tools!

re: who makes the better tools

I have used all kinds of tools, cheap and expensive. I just bought a cheap Wal mart set of 9 SAE wrenches, I only needed a 9/16" ( I haven't a clue where my good 1 went ) but they did not have seperate wrenches, and the set was only 6.50, so the set got me by. I'm missing a few sockets so I'm gonna buy a small set of craftsmen sockets for now, there not much more than H/F sockets so I'm gonna get the better name even if both are lifetime warranty, I'm still a backyard mechanic so if somthing breaks, I do have some time to get stuff replaced and not loose money because of it breaking.

My friends dad is a snap on dealer, and my friend tells me that the " Old Contract " is a lot looser and that good discounts/ repairs/ replacements can be given even if it is out of Snap On policy because it is less strict but the " New contract " is not as leniant and the dealers are heavily watched.

re: who makes the better tools

my 1st snap on dealer
ha what a jerk this was @ least 20 years ago

I had 2 3/8 ratchet sitting on the dash of my truck for months finally tracked him down and was pulling up just as he was getting out of his truck

I held the ratchet up and said will you fix these please?
he said did you buy them from me
I said no
and then he said no !

after a few well placed phone calls I got my ratchets fixed
immediately traded with some one for 2 S-K's

he still knows my name and cringes when he see's me

Snap on Fall off

re: who makes the better tools

I think it depends on the dealer, i broke a pair of snap on snap ring pliers at school, took them to work, the snap on guy exchanged them no questions asked and I hadnt bought a thing off him, so imo it comes down to the tool guy and how he treats you, if he's willing to exchange a tool like that I maybe more apt to buy off him in the future. My 2 cents.

re: who makes the better tools

The story i get told from my dad about the second snap-on dealer he ever had is the guy ( at the time he had no clue who he was first time he had ever seen him) goes to his tool box and starts going through the drawers with out permission. So at this point he crossed the line . Then when he found the screw drivers he went over to the vise and snapped off the wore out ends . I think this guy wanted to die, but after that he went out to his truck and got all new screw drivers for the "broken" ones. My dad said that he had some choice words with the guy, but was one of the best guys he ever had.

Now i don't know is anyone would do that today? Any one else had experiences like this one? Just remember that this was about 20 years ago.

re: who makes the better tools

If someone did that today
1st they would maybe get one busted
2nd they'd get their arse kicked because I know they dont use as good of metal as they used to
My 1st tools were craftsman ..they had good metal in them the crap they make today might as well be pot metal

oldschoolrod most definitely the dealer is the sales person Im a low pressure sale
and only the best will do
dont bug me with sales and pro mo and deals and I'll NEVER dicker with you and the price

There was one other guy that the 1st guy I mention trained he dident last long

All the rest of my jobbers in my career were gems

kinda like what Goerge Carlin said about food If I got to ask Question F it I pass

if money was not a factor and i was going somewhere where I dident have access to a tool jobber I'd pic Snap On or Mac in that order Id still grab a S-K ratchet or two out of my box because I dont throw tools but i will a snap on ratchet

re: who makes the better tools

most lifetime warranties apply to "hand tools only"

sorry if its new you can sometimes get some rhythm but other than that in warranty only but hey you can try
