snap on by far, comfortable, strong and really shiny lol. Only complaint is the price but you get what you pay for imo.

re: who makes the better tools
All depends on who you are. For the hobbyist, hard to beat Craftsman for the price. I haven't used Husky but I would put them in the same category.
If your livelyhood depends on it, Snap-on, Matco, Mac, Cornwell. Air tools, my favorite is Ingersoll-Rand. I hear the guys with the tool trucks are really struggling these days. The economy has really taken a hit on them. |

re: who makes the better tools
I've been thinking about buying a new 1/2" ratchet, or maybe one of each of the three drive sizes. Shopped a lot, and I'm starting to lean more towards Snap-On. The top Craftsman ratchet is only about $6 cheaper than the basement Snap-On. I would buy all Snap-On if money wasn't an object, but presently the best I can afford is S-K. It's all in what you plan to do with them.
In a while, Chet.

re: who makes the better tools
As being a professional wrench, I only buy Snap-on. As it was already said, you get what you pay for. For home, I use Craftsman. (Can't afford two sets of everything in Snap-on). Not only is it the quality, but it's the service. Something breaks, they come to you. Heck my dealer even showed up on a weekend back when I use to work them just to replace something for me.
Oh yeah, gotta love them Flank Drive Wrenches! |

re: who makes the better tools
Actually the best made tool is probably Snap-On or one of the other pro brands(equal quality) with Craftsman somewhere in the middle between them and the Harbor Freight variety. I think the real question is "what should you buy"? This of course depends entirely on what you will do with them. If you are a pro "wrench turner" with your entire livelihood depending on your tools then it is simple, GO WITH ONE OF THE PROS! If you are a hobbyist working on your street rod or and just a weekend mechanic maintaining your car or home projects then Craftsman is hard to beat. Then there is the guy who just tinkers with things around the house such as lawn mowers and the like who will get by just fine at Harbor Freight so it really depends on what you are going to need them for. Good tools are definitely expen$ive so before you lay out your money ask your self, do I really need Snap-on just to change spark plugs? or maybe, will Harbor Freight let me down and cost me money in lost work? Your choice
BTW My vote goes to Snap-Op and this is based on 37 years of maintaining some of the largest earth moving equipment in the world. We learned the hard way what will break and what will not. Last edited by oldred : 11-21-2005 at 06:02 PM. |

re: who makes the better tools
Oldred, my dad goes by the addage of "buy the best you can afford, and then buy up when you need to replace it." So far, Craftsman works 90 %+ for me. But I did vote for Snap-on.

re: who makes the better tools
Voted Snap-On as they and other top name brands are the best.
I'm one of those weekend wrenchers. I usually just buy Craftsman, Husky or Mastercraft Maximum (Canadian Tire Brand). All these have lifetime warranty so if they break I can just get them replaced. |

re: who makes the better tools
ratchets- I like snap-on
craftman- has some good sockets/ratcheting wrenches I-R for air tools-hands down China/Harbor Freight for misc shop stuff stay away from the air couplers at the HF they leak after couple months can return and they dont ask questions at HF I had only one my vote -snap on they make great speed bars and 18V torque wrench they understand tools and comfort of use square -end 3/8 and 1/2 ratchets kill your hands and craftsman made them for years |

Warrenty
I am not a pro mechanic, but I do have a few Mac tools I bought thru E Bay, one ratchet in particular must have been exchanged thru a Mac dealer for a new one because it looks like someone used it as a hammer
as the chrome is peeling in big flakes. If I chase down a Mac truck and try to exchange it for a brand spanking new ratchet , do you all think the guy will Thanks. |
