My project is a little strange but something I have been on and off of for a few years.
Mercedes OM617 5 cylinder diesel mated to a sbc chev manual trans. There are adapters out there for $1k but I am doing this from a different approach and want to re drill a blank neutral balanced Flywheel and make a thin adapter between the bell housing and block. The Mercedes crank has twelve 3/8" bolts and the Chevy has six 7/16 bolts. I was going to re drill a standard flywheel but would like to start with a blank steel flywheel. ( see first pic) *the links above were mostly alum flywheels.. looking for heaviers cast steel flywheel. opinions appreciated The last pic is the desired result... Land Cruiser /Mercedes Motor. |

Why can't you use a Mercedes flywheel and pressure plate and a Chevy disc and mod or different throw out and pilot bearings?
Or, drill the Mercedes flywheel for a different pressure plate. We usually learn more as we go. You might make an crank adaptor. Six counteersunk hole to bolt to the crank and six studs to accept the Chevy flywheel. This would mean you might have to make an adaptor to move the trans back or maybe not, as the clutch may still fit in the bell housing with a shorter or modified throw out bearing. A longer pilot bearing amy aslo be needed. |
