Why the attitude?

I saw American Hotrod for the first time last night, (actually the last 1/2hr) and was more than just a little disappointed with old Coddington himself. Yes he builds world class cars, but what a knob! I could never work for a guy like that for long. (I'd stay long enough to learn all his tricks, and then hopefully go on to build better) If thats what fame does to your head, I'd never want it. I see the same thing with Jesse James and Chip Foose. Its a shame really....Anyone else agree?

Totally. The dad (with the stupid looking mustache) that owns Orange County Choppers (American Chopper TV show) is a flaming idiot too.

I think its an act for the most part, they're trying to add Drama. I watched that gay Monster House show(for about 2 seconds), they do the same yelling at each other we have a deadline B.S. I only watch for the cars and bikes, the rest I can do without.

I dunno, when I saw them, they reminded me of the kinds of guys I work with. Most of us are ex military where pissy moods and a lot of yelling are the norm. My company specifically looks for those kind of hard driving take no ******* SOB leaders. Its expected from supervisors and auditors.
I saw an episode of American Chopper where this kid thought he'd suck up to his boss by making him a keychain. Bad move. Problem was, he didn't do it on his own time, and he used company resources to do it. I would've had to fire the poor kid. that sort of stuff isn't tolerated with government contracts using citizen's tax money, no matter how insignificant it may seem. At least that's the way it is down at my level. I can't say the same thing for the upper level executives though.

For some people, communication skills aren't as important as being intimidating.

Yes, they could get alot more accomplished if they communicate better, but from my chair, it's hilarious.

I think the world needs stupid people for the simple entertainment of others. Fortunately, TV producers feel the same way, otherwise, we'd never see them on screen.

There is a paradox here. I would assume a shop like Coddingtons or OC Choppers have people who actually enjoy building cars and bikes and get to exhibit a lot of creativity. Whereas in an airplane factory, after you've built hundreds of identical airplanes, and personal creativity is prohibited by Mil specs and FAA regulations, it gets very very boring and monotenous. Communication skills only get you so far in my environment. You can only communicate so many times to a guy that he's going to get fired if he continues to screw up sixty million dollar airplanes. After a while, it's "no more Mr. Nice Guy", because if I don't correct the situation, it will be my a** on the line.
So why Coddington and the OC Chopper guy act like they do is a bit puzzling. And of course, I'm sure a lot of it is just an act.

I guess it could be an act. I was thinking that because they have talent coming out of their wazoo, they thought they were gods...I hadn't considered the "show" factor.

I'm proud to be the stupid people!

If you ever work with me and my dad, alot of that happens. He thinks by yelling i hear. its more of a frustration thing though, when you tell someone to do somthing, but leave out a part (escpecially when youre under a deadline, and you gotta hurry), you figure they know what your thinking, or they just wasnt paying attention, then you get upset when they do it a different way. its funny realy when you look at it. I kinda Paul senoirs (dad on OCC) mustach, dude looks like a sea lion!!!

I was disappointed watching the show. Thought there would be a lot more creativity but it appears it is mostly clean-up...fresh paint and crate engines.

I do know one thing though. Boyds first old lady being the company officer with the attitude she has...she would be the first one with a work boot implanted in her posterior. That woman has ugly and mean she hasn't even used yet...

Regarding OCC, I've met Paul. (a long time ago) He is a hardcore kinda guy, but he hams it up for the show. He made his bones years ago, not with bikes, with ornamental Iron, fencing, etc. The bike business was a hobby until just a few years ago. Paul Jr. is the fabricator. They build a few great customs, and assemble a lot of "custom" bikes with off the shelf parts. I'm not sure, but they sure seem to farm out most of the real finesse work, paint, polishing, engines, etc. I heard from someone that they will make 1 day personal appearances for $100K plus expenses. It's cheap to produce, so it's on the air.

I've meet Boyd several times around the ISCA shows, And he is what he seems. He has no talent, except to spend money and belittle people. His talent is all hired, He had to take bankruptcy a few years age, and I wonder how he stayed in business. Rumor has it around the show car circuit that he is just a figure head, and they pay him to use his name.

That sounds like half of the business owners I know. Some times the product/service will sell itself.
