why cover plate numbers

I've noticed a number of you block or smudge the plate numbers when you post photos of your rides - most recently saw it on Rubberman's nice truck. Is this an identy theft sort of thing or is there some sort of scam people can use if they have your plate number and your name etc?
Just wondering if I should be more careful.

i dunno why....i've noticed the same thing all over the net....
hell, theres a guy near me that has two McLaren F1's....on his site he smudged the plate on one, but not on the other.....i would think that those cars would be sooooooo rare to spot around here in Massachusetts that it wouldnt matter if he even had plates on it.....police would just know it immediatly as his, so would everyone else.....lol

Paranoid tendency's cause folks to "hide" their tags on photos. They are concerned that some unscrupulous person would then go to the DMV in the state the tag is from and find out who the vehicle is registered to and their address.

Not so much for identity theft as vehicle theft.

Good idea? Maybe. Names and addresses are not really that difficult to find.

With the right information and connections, anyone could find your home address just by your plate numbers and state.

Makes you think twice about making enemies on the net. You just might find a man standing in your driveway at 3am with a molotov ****tail aimed at your house.

Anyway, just blur it, and don't piss people off.

Wouldn't the more adept car stealer type guy just go to 3 or 4 car shows in his area and write down the plate numbers of all the best looking cars rather than trolling the web? Seems like plate numbers are out there in public all the time for thieves to see.

I guess I can see the argument for retaining some anonymity of the web - in case someone takes offense at some comment you make about his ride.

And one can't argue with the "better safe than sorry" theory.

Guess I'll have to go fire up Photoshop.

I can just go to the city office and pay $2 to get info on a plate #

I did that trying to find the owner of a motorcycle I bought from the junkyard. got the address, but they won't give the phone number.
