Why do my piston rings have plastic tabs on them?

Looking at the SS oil expander ring. I have to brightly colored plastic tabs where I thought they should be over-lapping? Do I just break these off? Never seen them before?

ring in the center....

Those tabs are designed to stay there, they are a visual aid to verify that you don't have the ends of the oil expander overlapped once you get the rail rings on there.

Don't feel bad about the question, first engine I did at 17 yrs with no mentor help I read in the rebuild manual to make sure that all the rings had an appropriate gap, so I cut two links off that expander .....whoo-whoo, she smoked like a coal train.
