I think many people put images on their stuff to compensate for something they feel that they might lack.
Associating themselves with skulls, dragons, snakes, lightning, flames, will make that person somehow stronger, as all are universal symbols of death, destruction and mayhem.

I'll put my own feelings out there too. I figure that I will be with skulls and flames soon enough, when I pass into the next world. I really don't feel the need to start hanging with them now.
