Only car I ever remember being referred to as a "GOAT" was the Mopars - - - because of the Ram's head hood ornament, I thought

The Best i can search up is Greatest Of All Time.
a meeting of GTO' owners was called a gathering of the goats or goaters then Gas Oil & Tires you will need a lot of all of them...

Seems it is one of the "slang terms" like HEMI that the exact origin is uncertain.

Here is a good read on the history of the GTO.

Tater dug one up...3 years, 2 months
( folks usually dig taters up, I guess what goes around, comes around... )

I always though that GTO stood for the stuff they burned the most of, Gas Tires Oil...(not gas oil tires, Rob)

What I implied not so well was no one seems to know Who coined the phrase.

The guy that put it on in the past thought he could kill it by taking his backing down the road to Macomb and starting a new cruise the same night but it evidently didn't work because there were about 1,000 cars in Monmouth Friday night.... even without the headline cars. Great time to see a bunch of nice cars and see friends from way back. Even saw one of my mentors that I met in 1957 (I was then 14) so that was pretty cool.

You must be somewhere around Orion or Woodhull? One of my closest friends is a body man from Woodhull... Jerry E.

I remember the Vega and the Vette but not very well. Everything from the 70's is a haze as I was drunk and/or eating acid most of the time. What a waste....... but it seemed like the thing to do at the time I guess. Sure missed out on a lot of good hot rodding and pool playing.

I'm not a native of Galesburg, but I DID have some of the best Ribs I've ever eaten at the BBQ Rib Shack on US150 just south of US34. I had a delivery there (when I was truckin') one night and took a walk to get a bite to eat. I even got me a T-shirt! The next morning I snapped a pic of the place as I was on the way out. Some day I'd like to go there again.

I was part of the Goat generation. For as long as I can remember, we called them Goats. That was it. Plain and simple. No one asked why, no one cared why. They just were.
I was building my first hot rod back in 1965, a 54 Merc. One of my closest friends bought a new tr-powered 65 4 gear Goat, had a posi rear, lost it in the rain and hit a telephone pole with his quarter panel. My other friend and neighbor Tom, bought the car for what was owed on it. No interest, just paid the lone off. Another friend the next year bought a 66 2 door 400 cube, etc. Then another friend a 66 convert tri-power 4 spd, etc. Before I know it There are like 6 guys I know blowing around town in GTOs.
Though I'd been working since I was 11, I couldn't afford to buy a new car. Money went to the family. I had sold used cars one summer when I was 17 and the owner took me under his wing, he was like a father to me. I was running a 56 Chrysler mild custom with a 354 Hemi. A friend of my future BIL kept bugging me to sell it to him. It was one hell of a sweet car. I had done a lot of work to it. And, it was fast as hell. I also ran the highbeams on the top and lower beams on the bottom. So when I ran up on you at night you had no idea what was behind you. When I goosed it all you saw were headlights dancing in your rearview mirror. Made one think.
Anyway, I went back to see my friend at the used car lot and he had a 66 Tempest Custom. Stripped down no opps special. I got it at wholesale for 600 bucks.
Then the build began. I ended up with a 400 powered Tempest running 6 cylinder springs for weight transfer, a zoom competition racing clutch and pressure plate, M-22 with M-21 synchro sliders, after putting the pinion gear through the bottom of the 10 bolt rear I installed a 12 bolt Chevelle rear with 3:55 gears ( used the highway alot. Plus some engine work and headers and some other odds and ends and there wasn't a Goat or Chevelle, BBC or small, that could touch The Poor Man's Goat in at least a 5 town area around me. And she looked like a sleeper. No chrome wheels, just a white stripe down it's side and PONTIAC on it's quarters. The car was a mess that day in the photo. It was my wifes Bridal party. I owed the car for six years while owning other cars and hot rods as well during those years. Sold it as well as a 40 Olds and 76 (?) Dodge Dart Swinger 318 to buy a house. Then came the 49 Ford Gasser

Well, i am still running the same goat I started on this website with back when we were under 4000 members. A few years later, and a few thousand dollars into the motor, and I am about ready to paint it again... I don't care what anyone else calls it, I call it love...
