why would great running carb just start acting up?

i have had this holley 600 vac/sec on my 350 for a zillion years and it's always run great. it is the kind that has a metering block for the secondaries, with no jets. i was getting some backfiring before, changed the coil and a broken wire, and it pretty much fixed it except for when i'm just puttin down the freeway, not under any kind of load, and it will just hiccup, backfire here and there and then, this is the strange part........

i pull out the choke alittle bit and it runs fine! it must be running too lean right???? i already rebuilt my carb and changed my fuel filter and fuel pump. could it be something is stuck inside my carb? would changing the metering block out to one with jets possibly cure my problemo???? i am close to junking this holley anyway cause of my crappy mileage, but the rpm intake is a square bore design, so i cant really put a Qjet on it cause the adapters are so crappy. can i? what should i do?

I use a standard Mr. Gasket Q-jet adapter on my engines and they work just fine. I bolt them on the manifold first and smooth the entry and remove any ridges and mismatches before installing the carb.

When I have a carb that suddenly quits running right I check a few things; fuel filter, dirt in a jet or orifice, a stuck float, or (in the case of a Holley) a stuck or malfunctioning power valve.

Sometimes tapping on it will release a stuck float.

You mentioned it ran fine before but also that you rebuilt it. What was the reason for rebuilding and has the problem only been since the rebuild?

backfiring and stumbling all of a sudden on the way home from somewhere, when it ran great there. i have changed coil. checked my unilite etc etc. i just checked my spark. it also doesnt want to start when it's cold. my spark is very small like not high enough voltage. i dont know if my voltage regulator on my unilite is messing up, or if my coil sucks. i am thinking again of ignition problems. i am about to chuck it and get a HEI

A muddauber made a nest in your fuel line and now all of the mud is in your carb.
Never leave your parts open to the air in Florida
