wich head is the best to modify.

Looking to build a 383. Race only I have fulie 291. But I looks like I might be limited.over 210cc would be nice. I've heard vortecs are nice but irk anything about them. Will it work on the older blocks and will the victor jr. Manifold still work.

Edelbrock p/n 2913 is a Super Vic for Vortec heads. More on Vortec heads HERE.

For a race-only 383, the Vortec heads would be the limiting factor, like the 291's, or ANY production iron head. What I'm not certain of, is if there's more material in the 291 than the Vortec to port with. I'd gamble on the 291's to have more meat- although I don't have any info to support this.

Also, a lot depends on what vehicle you use, what your goals are, etc.

If you're serious about racing and are looking for more than 500hp I wouldn't start with factory heads. Vortecs can be modified to give an easy 500hp 383, much past that though and they're just too small. There are bowtie vortec heads that can work very well in the 500-600hp range though, assuming you have expert head work done and have a race built engine. For the money itd probably be cheaper to start with a cnc ported off the shelf head though, at $1500 a set its hard to compete with when you factor in machine work, port work, springs, valves, etc.

To start I might aim for 450hp. I just need to get the car built and going down the track. This motor I think I should keep mild somewhat. Not alot of money. Then I can always build a all out motor. It will be in a 89 mustang.

Vortec's are the best factoy head for sbc's, BUT the 291's are heavier and more durable. If you know how to tune then use the vortecs, if not and plan on breaking a few things then the 291's will last a little longer.
