If you are running a coil/points type system you're going to to have to do one of two things...... get a starter solenoid with the "I" (goes to the coil), "S" (goes to the ing switch) terminals or switch over to an HEI type ing system. HEI doesn't require the "I" terminal. You could rig up a relay to simulate this.... but why.

When the ing key is turned to start, The "S" terminal recieves power from the ing switch and engages the solenoid which then sends a full 12 volts out of the "I" terminal to the coil to aid in starting, after it starts and the ing switch returns to the run position, the "I" terminal goes dead and the coil recieves 9ish volts via a resistance wire or ballast resistor which prolongs the life of the coil. The coil would burn up in short order if it recieved a full 12 volts all the time.

You can also set it up w/a Ford type solenoid. More here.
