will 88 Tbird fenders bolt on to 83 t Bird

I'm hoping there are some Ford Fox Body experts to what I hope will work.

I own a 1983 Ford Thunderbird, I need two fenders for the front and have located some at a local wreckers.

Donor cars between 83 - 86 all seem to have shotty/rusty fenders for my liking. However The 1987 and 88 cars are a lot better and therefore what I want.

Here lies the question: will 1988 Fenders bolt on to my 83 without any issues. I measured the exterior length and width and they are the same (83 vs 88). I also measured the fenders spacing for the bolt holes on the top side of the fender (they are also exact between the model years)

I believe they will work, but the wrecker's computer says they have never see this done and their database does not indicate that these newer fenders can interchange with the older.

If any, the only issue I could see is in the front fascia, in 1987 Ford changed to the Euro headlamp design giving the bird/cougar a tweaked look, from the old recessed headlamps. So maybes the fenders would not mount exact to the front clip??

Can someone tell me if I can put the 87/88 fenders without issue? If the fenders work, can I still use my 1983 front fascia, or do I have to go with the newer clip as well?

Thanks!

You can bolt them up, but the body lines and trim won't line up and it will look wrong.

here are two good message boards you should check out:

Thanks for the links and advice Fiscus, it was a great help. I got the answers I needed. The body lines just above the moulding would be off slightly not lining up, as you said. Thanks again.
