Will temperature change affect look of metallics?
I need to repaint a hood and trunk lid and will be using same paint,gun,air pressure but the temperature is gonna be lower. Does that affect the way metallics lay?

Yep, lower temp is just the same as more reducer, slower travel, etc, it makes the metallic sink in the paint making the color darker.

But if you are concerned about matching previously painted parts when the weather was warmer I would say don't even think about it. There are way too many variables and to spray it EXACTLY like it was sprayed is expecting a lot. So being it won't be sprayed exactly like it was anyway, your color is going to be as close as you can get it be damned of the temp.

Im using a fast reducer in the AM and med temp after noon here in augusta Ga. But the brand of paint has a lot more to do with the color match than anything else..Chances are it wont match very well anyway if your not blending it.what year and color is it?

This is a little MG that was painted in pieces, dark metallic green. Even though it was in pieces I got a good match on the panels. The things in my favor are same paint, gun, and gun settings that I used. I can't believe that it matches as well as it does. I guess it would be a crapshoot to respray two panels. I'll just have to weigh out the defects I have now vs the defects after a respray.:D

Your chances are much better in that situation,use a test piece just to make sure.

If it's the same paint and all that is all you can ask for, shoot it. A test panel isn't going to do anything as it likely won't be sprayed EXACTLY the same as you would spray the cars parts anyway. It's just human nature, it takes a bunch of study to shoot exactly the same, you are over thinking it. No matter what you do, unless you just shot the previous part next to it a minute ago, you are over thinking it and will likely do something different. But with the same paint and all you are WAY heading in the right direction. That is realistically all you can do at this point.

I have watched one of the painters at work shoot test panels for color and I want to scream. He shoots this little piece of paper he is holding in his hand MUCH wetter than ANYONE would shoot the fender on a car. His spray out panel is WORTHLESS because of this. I have explained this to him and he still bombs the color on the test panel coat over coat one two three four in seconds, COMPLETELY different than how the car would be painted. And he wonders why his colors don't match, drives me CRAZY.

But it's human nature that you MUST overcome, it's very hard to apply that paint on a test panel the same way.

One thing is for sure you want the panels you are now spraying to be in the same "attitude" as the adjacent panels were painted. In other words you want the hood and trunk you are now shooting to be on a rack sitting exactly the same as they will be bolted on the car. Not hanging like a pair of blue jeans on a clothes line, laying down just as they are bolted on the car. After all, you didn't have the car hanging from the rear bumper when you painted the rear of the car where the trunk will bolt right? No, you had the car sitting there just as it will be driven. So your painting the area surrounding the trunk lid was horizontal, that is how you need to shoot the trunk, just as if it was sitting on the car.

What panels are you going to reshoot. A mg is so small there should be a break off point at a chrome line somewhere.

Thanks guys. Brian, I did have the doors, trunk lid, and hood in the right position when I first painted it so that surly helped the color match. The reason I wanted to repaint the trunk lid and hood was not because of color match but because of my stupid mistakes. I buffed through the clear on one corner of the trunk lid. The hood, well, I put my ***,(yes,my ***) right into the front edge of the wet hood and did a so so repair on it. One day I was painting in this same garage and bent over to spray down low and my *** hit the wall and it shot me right into the side of a wet car.
