The 2001 has a 3.5 engine and the 1990 has the 3.1 engine. I am wondering if the 2001 is controlled by a different computer vs the 1990

Not being up on the newer engines, I really don't know. Haven't heard of a 3.5. I thought I had read that the 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4 had the same belhousing pattern. Maybe the 3.5 is the same family of engine.

NO. Your car has a "Turbo Hydro 440" transmission. The '01 (either a 3.1 or a 3.8) 4T65E transmission, related but another animal.
For a direct swap you'll need a tranny from an 89-92 Grand Prix, Cutlass, Regal, or Lumina with a 3.1 engine. There others are but you have to deal with mounts in the wrong place, changing valve bodies, switches and wiring.
The key to the direct swap is the new tranny having the round "5 pin connector" at the front side of the tranny.

Thanks Guys it was wishful thinking on my part I was hopping a 2001 would fit. I think I will get it rebuilt. I just got a quote of $800 CND$ for a rebuild that includes pulling and re-installing the trany

As follow-up from my other thread I did try pouring in brake fluid that did not do a thing. I still have 1st, 2nd and reverse.
