windshield rubber seal

The windshield in my '37 ford coupe started leaking a little and I wanted to fix that before I put in the new carpet. Bought a Bob Drake rubber seal and have had a devil of a time getting it snapped into place. It went in easily along the bottom, at the four corners and across the top except for the very 2" in the middle. The sides will not snap in. The groove around the frame looks clear and clean, but no go. I am wondering if I will need to loosen the screws in the frame that fasten against the glass to open the space for the seal. Any one have any suggestions? I am using windex as a lubricant on the seal and that worked fine, but made no difference on the side and the top middle 2".
Thanks guys.
