Windshield wiper wiring 1966 Chevelle
I have 3 wires coming through the firewall from the wiper switch. Where do they go from there?

Your wiper switch on the dash will have 3 wires and goes thru the firewall to the wiper moter, one wire should be hot 9(comes from ignition/fuse box), one should go to the low speed and one to the high speed on the wiper moter, then the wiper moter should have a ground on it. If you have a varible speed wiper system it will be different, but I don't believe your chevy had the in that year. 30dee |

Try looking at these wiring diagrams and pictures to get an idea what the harness looks like and the connections you have to make. Good luck

i know this is an old thread
hello i have a question that i would love to know the answer to,
i have a 68 chevelle the wiper motor washer motor wiring is killing me i cant figure it out, i think i know what problem is but i want clarification, the washer motor isn't there, i have ran the wiper motor by itself but it shorted out. i have yellow2x, black, lt and dk blue wires that go to it i have them there, so i guess my questions are can you run the wiper motor by itself and how to hook up the wires if you can, thank you for looking back at this old forum,i have a pic of what it looks like can email to you thanks again Travis |

Yellow wire is the power to motor----hot all the time the key is on.
The black--blue--lt blue wires only direct a ground path thru one of the wires grounds the washer pump---thus turning on the pump (hot yellow wire to wiper motor and daisychained to washer pump) the other 2 wires ground something internal to the wiper motor. one wire grounded will be one speed----both wires grounded will be another speed. You MUST have a good solid ground at the wiper switch to dash. The wiper motor itself must have a solid ground path to the body of the car. if one of these grounds is weak---motor or pump may not work. I cannot tell which wires do what right now (travelling), but this may get you started |

The switch is the ground path, there will be no hot from fuse box at the switch. Hot goes to motor, wires 1 and 2 are the speeds and connect to motor from switch, wire 3 is washer pump, body of switch connects ground to metal dash or body(or 4th wire if plastic dash).
Like Bryan said, wiper motor is hot any time key is on. You almost have to think of the switch in reverse; similar to the hot all the time dome light, the door pin buttons are the ground for the light |

Looks like Bryan and Eric have you on the right track, but since a picture is worth a thousand words, maybe this will help as well.

Thanks Joe, simple illustration is great!
Switched ground path circuits give a lot of hotrodders trouble, they are used to always switching on the hot side. |

on my wiper motor i have three terminals i don't have a washer motor connected can i still run the wipers with out the washer motor and what orientation should the wires be in to make it run.
at the pic does this imply that the hot wire should be on the middle terminal thanks again for all info Travis **pic of what my wiper motor looks like Last edited by velle307 : 07-23-2010 at 03:13 AM. |

This is for my 66----with 67 switch
Not too unlikely that the 68 will be similar. |
