Winter Olympics - but no snow?

2 Weeks to go to the official start of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Vancouver is the warmest (average winter temperatures) City to ever host the Winter Olympics.

And guess what? It was plus 10 (Celsius) again today (about 18 "foreign-height degrees above freezing or 50 degrees for our US friends)

Indoor events are OK - hockey, ice dancing, curling, speedskating etc - as they are all in temperature-controlled arenas

Major ski events are at Whistler Resort - just far enough inland so that there are many, many, many feet of snow.

But some events such as snow-boarding and a few others are at Cypress Bowl - which is a very nice mountain/ski resort, (where my family often has season ski passes) and there is NO snow there - it is right within the metro Vancouver city limits!

They are now frantically trucking in snow and machine spreading/grooming and hoping there will be enuff of the white stuff.

The golfers are out en masse, the tennis courts are busy, and my lawn needs cutting again! Did someone say WINTER Olympics?

I agree with this, send it all up there! There is more snow forecast for Monday. Only a dusting, three inches or so.

Snow?

LOL - But we only need snow on the ski hills, not the city itself! If it stays at 50*F (plus 10 C) or so in the city itself, I promise not to complain!

And since my goal for the Olies is to just get thru the next month or so of traffic disruptions, security checkpoints, etc without getting too PO'd at the entire world.....

And now - just to make me feel even better about the whole shmozzle, the US Dep't of Homeland Insecurity has just rented a couple of floors of the bldg right across the street from my office for the duration. Oh great! (Oh Boss? Can I get blast-proof windows installed?)

Warmest January on record here in good 'ol Washington State. One of my coworkers recently returned from a trip to Whistler and he said they were piling the snow up into huge piles and covering them with tarps in order to help preserve what they have.

50 Degrees? Are you guys kidding. We haven't seen warmth like that since Nov. of 2009. I'd still be out riding my motorcycle with a heat wave like that.

Why did you let our Dept of Homeland Insecurity in your country? Little out of their jurisdiction. Maybe they are there to learn something? Oh, I get it: a Liberal boondoggle under the guise of "Official Business".

No wonder you don't have snow with some Washington, DC hot air now in town.

As far as cold, we could send you some as here in the normally frozen tundra of the Great Northeast, our usual 2+ feet of January snow cover is now down to zip in my area - but it HAS been cold. A daughter in Richmond, VA has had over 3 feet of snow since mid Dec - us, maybe 3 inches
